The committee met at 10:17 a.m., Hon. L. Mendel Rivers (chairman) presiding. The CHAIRMAN. Let the committee come to order. Gentlemen, I apologize for being late; I had to ride the railroad. We don't have any airline schedule that is convenient for getting here early in the morning. You have noticed in the paper, Mr. Secretary, where I put a release that we are going to look into the shortage of commercial transportation for these GI's who are compelled to spend endless hours in the airline ticket waiting rooms throughout America. Mr. VANCE. Yes, Mr. Chairman. I saw that in the paper this morning. The CHAIRMAN. I know whereof I speak. You, too, have some experience with this, haven't you, Mr. Secretary? Mr. VANCE. I have had some experience; yes, sir. The CHAIRMAN. I notice one representative of the airline, Mr. Tipton, has said they have given special rates. They as likely told you about options. They can't ride on special rates. They have to ride on airplanes. I suggest that they accompany these special rates with some additional sections of these planes for which the special rates are available. You can't ride on special rates. Now, I am going to have Mr. Earl Morgan assigned as counsel for this subcommittee. Mr. Ichord will be chairman. I have asked Mr. Lennon to serve on it, and Mr. Chamberlain. All I want is the airlines to make an effort to put additional sections on the flights which they have scheduled; that is all. A lot of these GI's have come to me and said, "This is my last pass before I am going overseas." And I think it is unfortunate, Mr. Secretary, Mr. Ignatius. Nobody, but nobody can tell me that a conscientious effort has been made to provide these young men with transportation. I will give you a concrete example anytime you want it. Fort Jackson has 30,000-plus troops. The complex at Charleston has a good 50,000-plus troops. From Charleston to Atlanta, Ga., the only line that they have serving that is Delta. I talked to Mr. Woolman, and he said he is going to try to put additional flights on. I hope he does. We are not trying to convict anybody before we have an inquiry. I think it is unfortunate that these obsolescent aircraft-and 90 per (8635) |
