The personal appearance of Hooker was mean, for he was of low stature, and stooped very much, and his natural bashfulness was much encreased by a dimness of sight, which was the consequence of intense study.

Of his extraordinary humility we have a pleasing instance, related in his life, by Walton; who says that I looker and his poor parish clerk did never talk but with both their hats on, or both off at the same time.'
