the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud 46 voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Some of them that stood 47 there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it 48 with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The 49 rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the 50

Darkness.] I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering. Is. 1. 3. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day. Am. viii. 9. And the fourth angel sounded; and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars, so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. Re. viii. 12. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. Re. ix. 2.

46 Jesus cried with a loud voice.] And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Mar. xv. 34. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and having said thus he gave up the ghost. Lu. xxiii. 46. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus, therefore, had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. John xix. 28, 29, 30. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest. Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications, with strong crying and tears, unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered. He. v. 5. 7, 8.

Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?] My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? Ps. xxii. 1. They that lay wait for my soul take counsel together, saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him, for there is none to deliver him. Ps. lxxi. 11. It pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief; when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong

his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Is. liii. 10. Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the Lord hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. Lam. i. 12. See chap.

47 This man calleth for Elias.] xi. 14. And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias. And one ran, and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone, let us see whether Elias will come to take him down. Mar. xv.

35, 36.

48 Gave him to drink.] They gave me also gall for meat, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. Ps. lxix. 21. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar. Lu. xxiii. 36. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus, therefore, had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. John xix. 29, 30.

49 See verse 43.

50 When he had cried again.] And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. Mar. xv. 37. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. Lu. xxiii. 46. When Jesus, therefore, had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. John xix. 30.

Yielded up the ghost.] See chap. xx. 28. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. Ps. xxii. 14, 15. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death. Because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth, yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief. When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; be

51 ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the

cause he hath poured out his soul unto death; and he was numbered with the transgressors, and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Is. liii. 9-12. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. John x. 11. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. He. ii. 14. How much more (than the blood of bulls and goats) shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? He. ix. 14.

51 The veil of the temple was rent.] And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work with cherubims shall it be made and thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of shittim wood overlaid with gold; their hooks shall be of gold, upon the four sockets of silver. And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither, within the vail, the ark of the testimony. And the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy. And thou shalt put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony, in the most holy place. And thou shalt set the table without the vail, and the candlestick over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side. And thou shalt make an hanging for the door of the tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework. And thou shalt make for the hanging five pillars of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold, and their hooks shall be of gold; and thou shalt cast five sockets of brass for them. Ex. xxvi. 31-37. And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the vail of the covering, and covered the ark of the testimony, as the Lord commanded Moses. Ec. xl. 21. And the Lord said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy-seat, which is upon the ark, that he die not; for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy-seat. And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the Lord, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail: and he shall put the incense upon the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy-seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not. And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercyseat eastward; and before the mercy-seat shall

he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times. Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy-seat, and before the mercy-seat. Le. xvi. 2. 12— 15.

"He" (" of the seed of Aaron" that hath a blemish) shall not go in unto the vail, nor come nigh unto the altar, because he hath a blemish; that he profane not my sanctuaries: for I the Lord do sanctify them. Le. xxi. 23. And he made the vail of blue, and purple, and crimson, and fine linen, and wrought cherubims thereon. 2 Ch. iii. 14. And he (the Lord of hosts) will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. Is. xxv. 7. And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. Mar. xv. 38. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. Lu. xxiii. 45. But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ; for he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace. And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby; and came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh; for through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Ep. ii. 13–18. God confirmed it by an oath, that we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast; and which entereth into that within the veil. He. vi. 17, 18, 19. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; and having an High Priest over the house of God; let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. He. x. 19-22.

And the earth did quake.] And behold, there was a great earthquake, for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door (of the sepulchre), and sat upon it. Mat. xxviii. 2. Then (when in my distress I called upon the Lord) the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were

rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the 52 saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrec- 53 tion, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Now when 54

shaken, because he was wroth. Ps. xviii. 7. Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils. Ps. xviii. 15. For behold, the Lord cometh forth out of his place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth. And the mountains shall be molten under him, and the valleys shall be cleft, as wax before the fire, and as the waters that are poured down a steep place. Mi. i. 3, 4. The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. The Lord hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers; Bashan languisheth, and Carmel; and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burnt at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. Nah. i. 3, 4, 5. The mountains saw thee, and they trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high. The sun and moon stood still in their habitation; at the light of thine arrows they went, and at the shining of thy glittering spear. Thou didst march through the land in indignation, thou didst thresh the heathen in anger: thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation with thine anointed. Thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck. Ha. iii. 10-13. See that ye refuse not him that speaketh; for if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven. Whose voise then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. He. xii. 25, 26, 27. And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell; and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven. And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament; and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Re. xi. 13. 19.

52 Many bodies of the saints.] He (Christ) will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all

faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth; for the Lord hath spoken it. Is. xxv. 8. Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust; for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead. Is. xxvi. 19. I will ransom "them" ("the Jews") from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction repentance shall be hid from mine eyes. Ho. xiii. 14. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live; for as the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself, and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. Marvel not at this; for the hour is coming in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John v. 25-29. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept. 1 Co. xv. 20.

Slept arose.] And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Da. xii. 2. For "this cause" ("the eating and drinking irreverently") many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 1 Co. xi. 30. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. 1 Co. xv. 51. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 1 The. iv. 14. God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation, by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. 1 The. v. 9, 10.

53 Holy city.] him (Jesus) up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple. Mat. iv. 5. And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem. The rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts to dwell in other cities. Ne. xi. 1. They call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The Lord of hosts is his name. Is. xlviii. 2. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, &c. Da. ix. 24. The court which is without the teinple leave out (said the angel

Then the devil taketh

the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, 55 saying, Truly this was the Son of God. And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, minis56 tering unto him: Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary

who ordered John to measure the temple of God), and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles, and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. Re. xi. 2. And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Re. xxi. 2. And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Re. xxii. 19.

54 The centurion, &c.] See verse 36, and chap. viii. 5. And as they went about to kill him (Paul), tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them; and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul. Ac. xxi. 31, 32. And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band. Ac. xxvii. 1.

Saw the earthquake.] And when the centurion which stood over against him saw that he (Jesus) so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God. Mar. xv. 39. Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. And all his acquaintances, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off beholding these things. Lu. xxiii. 47, 48, 49.

Feared greatly.] And he (king Ahaziah) sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight. Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight. 2 Ki. i. 13, 14. Now, when they heard "this" ("that God had made that same Jesus, whom they had crucified, both Lord and Christ"), they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter, and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Ac. ii. 37. Then "he" ("the keeper of the prison at Philippi") called

for a light (when he heard the earthquake), and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Ae. xvi. 29, 30. And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were

affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven. Re. xi. 13.

Truly this was the Son of God.] See verse xl. 43. Then said they all (the chief priests and the Scribes), Art thou the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. Lu. xxii. 70. The Jews answered "him" ("Pilate," who said, I find no fault in kim), We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. John xix. 7. Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the Gospel of God, concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Ro. i. 1, 3, 4.

55 Many women were there.] And there followed "him" ("Jesus") a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus, turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. And all his acquaintances, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off beholding these things. Lu. xxiii. 27, 28. 48, 49. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy Son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her unto his own home. John xix. 25, 26, 27.

Ministering unto him.] And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others (were with him), which ministered to him of their substance. Lu. viii. 2, 3.

56 Mary Magdalene.] See verse 61. In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn

the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children. When the even was come, there came a rich man of 57 Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate 58

toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre. Mat. xxviii. 1. There were also women looking on afar off, among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome, (who also when he was in Galilee followed him, and ministered unto him,) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem. Mar. xv. 40, 41. And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had brought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. Now when Jesus was risen, early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. Mar. xvi. 1. 9. It was Mary Magdelene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles (respecting Christ's resurrection). Lu. xxiv. 10. The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. Mary Magdalene (soon after) came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her (saying, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God). John xx. 1. 18. See chap.

xxviii. 1.

Mary, the mother of James.] And Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of Joses, beheld where he (Jesus) was laid. Mar. xv. 47. When the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had brought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. Mar. xvi. 1. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. John xix. 25.

James and Joses.] Is not this the carpenter's son (said the people of Christ's own country)? Is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? Mat. xiii. 55. There were also women looking on afar off, among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome. Mar. xv. 40. And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had brought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. Mar. xvi. 1.

And the mother of Zebedee's children.] Then (as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem) came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her,

What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. Mat. xx. 20, 21.

57 There came a rich man, &c.] And now when the evening was come (because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath), Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. Mar. xv. 42, 43. And behold there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor, and he was a good man, and a just: (the same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them); he was of Arimathea, a city of the Jews; who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. Lu. xxiii. 50. 51. And after "this" ("the soldier's piercing the side of Jesus with a spear," &c.) Joseph of Arimathea, (being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews,) besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus, therefore, because of the Jews' preparation day, for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. John xix. 38-42.

Arimathea.] Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of Mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. 1 Sa. i. 1. And his (Samuel's) return was to Ramah, for there was his house: and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the Lord. 1 Sa. vii. 17.

58 And begged the body of Jesus.] Pilate marvelled if he (Jesus) were already dead, and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. And when he knew it of the centurion he gave the body to Joseph. And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre. Mar. xv. 44, 45, 46. This man (Joseph of Arimathea) went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped
