CONTRIBUTIONS to bibliographical works of reference are always welcome, and we observe with much pleasure Mr. Darling's announcement of a Library-Manual of Theological and General Literature, founded chiefly on the books contained in his valuable "Clerical Library," which will comprise nearly all authors of note, ancient and modern, in Theology, Ecclesiastical History, Moral Philosophy, and the various departments connected therewith, including a selection in most branches of Literature; with short Biographical Notices and Catalogue of each Author's Works: its classified arrangement will extend beyond books to the several Dissertations and Treatises contained in volumes, and, by a twofold arrangement of texts and subjects, will afford an easy reference to a large mass of theological disquisition hitherto locked up and unknown. It is contemplated that the whole work will be completed in 2 vols. 8vo., and will be delivered to subscribers in parts: the first part is now ready, and, after November, the future parts will appear monthly.

Dr. Owgan, of Trinity College, Dublin, is translating for Mr. Kelly's "Classical Library," the Philippic and Olynthiac Orations of Demosthenes, with those of Æschines and Demosthenes de Coronâ.Mr. Bosworth, of Regent Street, commences this month the publict tion of a new Magazine, to appear monthly, 1s. each number: its prospectus promises that every means will be taken to render it a welcome guest to all Englishmen, and a sound organ of opinion on all the topics of the day. There is evidently room for a periodical of sterling merit at a low price, and every probability exists that it will command a large circulation.-We observe the commencement of a New York Quarterly Review," combining literary and political articles from both sides of the Atlantic: the only review of a corresponding character hitherto established has been the North American Review.-Hawthorne is engaged upon a Life of an old fellow-student, a General Pierce.-Poole's Little Pedlingtons has only just been reprinted in America, and appears gaining immense popularity.-Herman Melville is preparing for publication "Pierre, or the Ambiguities."-The 6th vol. of Hildreth's History of the United States has just been published.

Mr. Bentley has several announcements for the next publication season: they comprehend, Lives of the Archbishops of Canterbury-A Narrative of Charles the First at Carrisbrook Castle-a new Novel, by Miss Sinclair, entitled" Beatrice"-Lives of the Poets-Laureates-and a Second Narrative of Captain Keppel, being a Visit to the Indian Archipelago in H.M.S. Maander, with portions of the Journals of Sir James Brooke."-Head's "Emigrant" is announced for republication in Murray's Reading Books for Railways.-Mr. Lever commences a new Tale next month, to appear, in shilling parts, under the title of " The Dodd Family abroad."-Dr. Thomas Thomson, a member of a mission sent into Tibet and the Western Himalaya by the Indian government for scientific exploration, has been for some time preparing an account of his Travels in that little-known country, and it will be published on the 7th instant, in one thick 8vo. volume, by the Messrs. Reeve.

The second volume of Mr. Jerdan's Autobiography is published this day.-Mr. Bohn's "Standard Library" presents this mouth a new volume of Neander's Church History," and his "Classical Library" a translation into English prose of Juvenal, Persins, Sulpicia, and Lucilius.-Mr. Knight having completed the issue of his national edition of the Pictorial Shakspeare by the publication of Part 40, the price will be raised to 1s. 6d. each part at the expiration of the present month.--Messrs. Ingram and Cooke have followed up their publication of Madame Pfeiffer's "Lady's Voyage" by that of her "Visit to Iceland:" they are two of the most astonishing books for cheapness combined with appearance that

have yet appeared.-A new edition of Isaac Walton's Lives is appearing in parts, embellished with steel and wood engravings: it is published as a contribution to " The Contemplative Man's Library intended for the thinking few."

The Literary Gazette gives this week an instance of justice rendered to authors in the French law cou:ts. A physician who had contributed an article on medicine to an Encyclopædia, and was refused payment by the editor for more of the article than he had made use of, brought his action against the editor; and "the Court laid down that an editor has no right whatever to alter or abridge an article without the author's consent, and condemned the defendant to cut out the article from the copies of the Encyclopædia still unsold and to replace it by the one originally written, to reprint sufficient copies of the latter to send to all the subscribers of the work, and to pay the author the full value."
