Second Week. Wednesday Evening.

grace, that they may execute justice and maintain truth; and that thy people, being secured by the ministration of wise and equal laws, may serve thee in all godly quietness.

Pardon, O Lord, our sins and accept our prayers, granting us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but in the name and through the merits of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Second Week. Wednesday Evening.

GREAT and eternal God, the infinite Jehovah, who only hast immortality, and dwellest in the light which no man can approach unto, we humbly look unto thee as the Father of our spirits, and the Giver of all good. Whom have we in heaven but thee, and who is there on earth that we can desire in comparison of thee! Thou alone hast the words of eternal life, and art the hope of all the ends of the world. Thou hast laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of thy hand. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure, and thy years shall have no end. Though thy dwelling is in the heavens, and thy glory above them, yet thou dost humble thyself to behold the things that are in the earth thou raisest the poor out of the dust; thou hearest the prayer of the weak and destitute.

Let thine ears, we beseech thee, be attentive to our humble supplication. We would approach thee, O Lord, not trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies, and in the merits of our Mediator, Jesus Christ. May thy blessed Spirit aid our devotions, sanctify our hearts, and raise our affections from this world to thee. Open thou our lips, that our mouth may show forth thy praise

Second Week. Wednesday Evening.

Make us deeply sensible that thou art in heaven and we upon earth; that thou art wise, and just, and good, while we are blind, and frail, and sinful. With humble reverence may we rejoice that thou art a God hearing prayer and forgiving sin; and art more ready to give good gifts than we to ask. Extend to us, O Lord, thy pardoning mercy, forgiving our multiplied offences, and giving us those good things, which of ourselves we are not worthy to pray for. Be merciful unto us and bless us, and cause thy face to shine upon us. that thy way may be known upon earth; thy saving health among all nations. Let the people praise thee, O Lord; let all the people praise thee.

Fill us with hope and joy in believing thy promises in Jesus Christ: may we esteem all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of him. May we know him and the power of his resurrection, and be in all things conformed to his image, knowing that he who hath the Son hath life, and shall never come into condemnation. May we be followers of God, as dear children, and be perfect in love, as our Father in heaven is perfect. Give us grace to put on, as the elect of God, bowels of mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness and long-suffering, forbearing one another, and forgiving one another. Teach us what thou wilt have us to do, and make us ready to every good work.

We beseech thee, O Lord, to preserve us from all self-righteousness, and vain reliance on the merits. of what we do. May we never forget that by grace we are saved, through faith, and that not of ourselves it is the gift of God. Give us, we beseech thee, a right view of that living faith in Christ which does not make void, but establishes the law; which renews the heart, and is fruitful in good works. May we ever remember that in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing nor

uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by love and keepeth the commandments of God. May we not deceive ourselves, by trusting in the Savior, while we neglect his great salvation; by calling him Lord, while we do not the things which he commands. O suffer us not to perish amidst the means designed to save us. May we never be weary in doing well. Though faint may we still be pursuing, pressing towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let our trust and our hope be ever in him. As our Prophet, may we hearken to his word; as our Priest, let our trust be in the merits of his one sacrifice for sins; and as our King, may we faithfully observe his precepts.

Help us, O Lord, to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, and to perform faithfully every duty which we owe to others. Preserve us from envy, selfishness and pride, and from all manner of uncharitableness. Give us grace to bear with patience and a forgiving spirit the faults of men, and the injuries of those who may do us wrong, not rendering evil for evil, but endeavoring to overcome evil with good. Let the spirit which was in our Savior Christ, his love and forbearance and longsuffering, be also in us. As he loved us, may we also love one another. Though pains or sorrows should be our portion, let us always rejoice in the good and prosperity of other people, and be ever ready to praise thee for thy goodness, and for all the benefits bestowed upon our fellow-men. Especially give us grace to rejoice in their hopes of salvation; in their repentance, and faith, and obedience to thy holy word.

We beseech thee, O Lord, this our evening sacrifice.

protection through this night. Preserve us, we pray thee, from every evil; refresh our bodies with needful rest; and may we rise in the morning with thankful hearts disposed to do thy will. We ask these things in the name of our only Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

And to the God of our salvation, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be ascribed the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Second Week. Thursday Morning.

ADORABLE and everliving God, whose throne is the highest heaven and the earth thy footstool, we desire this morning to raise our heart and our voice to thee, as the Father of mercies; the giver of all good; the God of all comfort. Thou dost according to thy will in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. The day is thine and the night is thine, and as thou art graciously pleased to renew our time, and our strength, and our comforts, help us to renew our purposes to walk in the way of thy commandments. May our souls praise thee, who saveth our life from destruction, and crowneth us with mercy and loving kindness. Do thou, who hast brought us safely to the beginning of this day, defend us from its perils, and grant that all we do may be ordered by thy governance and righteous in thy sight. Whether we eat, or drink, or whatsoever we do, may it be to thy glory in Jesus Christ.

Let our prayer, we beseech thee, come before thee as the morning incense. We trust not in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy to appear before thee, nor to ask or receive the smallest favor. Enter not

into judgment with thy sinful creatures; for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. With the light of the morning, may we enjoy the light of thy countenance. Grant that the Sun of Righteousness may enlighten our souls in the ways of heavenly wisdom, and our path be as the shining light, which shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Do thou, who makest the outgoings of the morning to rejoice, help us to walk in the way of thy commandments, and faithfully to discharge the duties of our several stations. Preserve us from all idolatrous affection for worldly things. May we seek first and as the greatest good the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and while we are diligent in our lawful business, may we use the world as not abusing it. Do thou, who art about our bed and about our paths, direct us in the way that we should go, and suffer not our feet to slip.

We pray for thy blessing upon this family; may our youth be trained up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and through thy grace never depart from the way in which they should go, nor from the holy commandment given unto them. Pour thy blessing upon our seed, and thy Spirit upon our offspring; that our sons may be as plants growing in thy vineyard, and our daughters be adorned with the ornament of a Christian spirit. Give thy blessing to all the rising generation. May they remember their Creator in the days of their youth; may they seek thee while thou mayst be found and call upon thee while thou art near. serve them from the snares and temptations of this evil world. May they remember the Lord's day to keep it holy, rejoicing to view it, not as a burthen, but as being made for man, and knowing that the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.
