President Washington vetoed two bills, both of which
were regular vetoes. Neither was overridden.
There were no vetoes in the three sessions of the First
Congress, in the second session of the Second Con-
gress, in the two sessions of the Third Congress, nor
in the first session of the Fourth Congress.

Second Congress, First Session

Regular Veto

H.R. 163.

For an apportionment of Representatives among the several states, according to the first enumeration. Vetoed April 5, 1792. The veto message was laid before the House. (April 5, 1792, H. Jour., pp. 563, 564; see also S. Misc. Doc. No. 53, 49th Cong., 2d sess., p. 9).

The House sustained the veto on April 6, 1792 by a vote of 28 yeas to 33 nays. (April 6, 1792, H. Jour., p. 565).

Regular veto

To alter and amend an act, entitled "An act to ascertain and fix the military establishment of the United States."

Vetoed February 28, 1797. The veto message was laid before the House. (February 28, 1797, H. Jour., p. 726, 727).

The House sustained the veto on March 1, 1797 by a vote of 55 yeas to 36 nays. (March 1, 1797, H. Jour., p. 728).
