PROJECT: Acquires ownership of land. REQUIREMENT: Additional land to accommodate the TRIDENT II (D-5) mission at Kings Bay. Land acquisition is required for: (1) development of the site, (2) buffer areas with the surrounding private property, and (3) space so that explosive safety areas will not fall on to private property now under restrictive easement. CURRENT SITUATION: The existing land held in fee simple and easements by the government does not provide adequate space for the contemplated development of the refit site. This project will not acquire in fee simple existing easements on state-owned marshland or land designated for turnover to the Department of the Interior as the Cumberland Island National Seashore. IMPACT IF NOT PROVIDED: The strategic weapons area at Kings Bay cannot be developed to accommodate the TRIDENT II (D-5) missile.
