Mat. tude saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

priests prevailed. And Pilate gave sentence
that it should be as they required.

Luke And he released unto them him that for sedi-

they had desired. See Mark, ver. 7, 8.

15

Sect. 144. Jesus is led forth, and crucified with

thieves.

19 16John Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified.

Mat. And after that they had mocked him, they took

the robe off

From him, and put his own raiment on

him.

Mar. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple

From him, and put his own clothes on him,

Mar. And led him out to crucify him.

Mat. And led him away to crucify him.

John And they took Jesus, and led him away.
Mat. And as they came out, they found a man of
Cyrene,

Mar.

Simon by name; him they compelled to bear his cross.

And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, Who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus,

To bear his cross.

LukeAnd as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon a Cyrenian, coming out of the coun

And on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

Luke And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed, xc. to ver. 33.

17 John And he bearing his cross, went forth into a place called the place of a skull,

Mar.

Which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha, . And they bring him unto the place Gol gotha,

Which is, being interpreted, the place of a skull. Mat. And when they were come unto a place cailed Golgotha,

And two other with him, on either side

one, and Jesus in the midst.

Luke Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Sect. 145. The title is put up, and lots are cast. 19 John And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. (See Mat. ver.37.) This title then read many of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The king of the Jews; but that he said, I am king of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written. 23 John Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part, and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rent it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be:

LukeAnd they parted his raiment,

And cast lots.

Mar. And when they had crucified him, they part, ed his garments,

Mat.

Casting lots upon them, what every man should take.

The one on his right hand, and the other

on his left.

Mat. Then were there two thieves crucified with him;

One on the right hand, and another on the left.

N. B. Luke, ch. xxiii. 33. speaks of the nailing of the thieves to the crosses. Here Matthew and Mark speak of the erection of the crosses. Mar. And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

Sect. 146. The mob, the rulers, the priests, &c. revile Jesus.

Mat. And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, and saying,

Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself:

If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

Mar. And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying,

Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, Save thyself,

And come down from the cross.

Luke And the people stood beholding:

Luke And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others,

Let him save himself, if he be Christ the chosen of God.

Mar. Likewise also the chief priests mocking, said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others, himself he cannot save.

Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.

Mat. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others, himself he canot save:

If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

Mat. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

Luke And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. And a superscription also was written over him, in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Mat. The thieves also which were crucified with him cast the same in his teeth.

Mar. And they that were crucified with him, reviled him.

Luke And one of the malefactors which were hang-
ed, railed on him,

Luke Saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

Luke But the other answering, rebuked him, saying,
Dost thou not fear God, seeing thou art in the
same condemnation? And we indeed justly,
for we receive the due reward of our deeds;
but this man hath done nothing amiss. And
he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when
thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus
said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day
shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Sect. 147. The eclipse. Jesus expires.
Mat. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness
Over all the land unto the ninth hour.
Mar. And when the sixth hour was come, there was
darkness

Over the whole land, until the ninth hour. Luke And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness

Over all the earth, until the ninth hour. LukeAnd the sun was darkened.

19 25 John Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mo ther, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. (See Matt. ver. 55.) When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son. Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother. And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

27

Mat. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a
loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?
That is to say, My God, my God, why
hast thou forsaken me?

Mar. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud
voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?
Which is, being interpreted, My God, my
God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Mar. And some of them that stood by, when they
Heard it, said, Behold he calleth Elias.
Mat. Some of them that stood there, when they
Heard that, said, This man calleth for
Elias.

28 John After this, Jesus knowing that all things were
now accomplished, that the Scripture might be
fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a
vessel full of vinegar :

29

John And they filled a spunge with vinegar,
And put it upon hyssop, and put it to his

mouth.
