Foreword

The NIH Almanac was originated for the use of information staffs, administrators, and other Federal employees who often need access to pertinent facts about the National Institutes of Health, principal agency of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare for biomedical research, research training, and biomedical communications. However, more and more requests for copies came from persons outside the Department, and now the NIH Almanac is distributed widely to news media, administrators, and others who find it useful.

Although the Almanac includes data found in other basic NIH publications, it is intended to complement rather than replace these, and to offer in one volume all important historical data and other reference material updated annually. The reader is referred for further information to the handbook, Basic Data Relating to the National Institutes of Health, which includes detailed statistics for each fiscal year, and to the brochure, The National Institutes of Health (PHS Publication No. 81).

IRVING GOLDBERG,
Director, Office of Information.
