oil received at Paulsboro. Exports to destinations outside the United States

were composed mainly of crude oil and petroleum products originating at or in

the vicinity of Claymont and Marcus Hook, automobiles and parts from Chester,

and petroleum products from Paulsboro, with some manufactured goods from each

locality.

COASTWISE TRAFFIC

As stated in the preceding paragraph no ocean-going commerce moved either

inbound or outbound above the Philadelphia port limits. From a tonnage stand

point, crude oil and petroleum products constituted the bulk of the coastwise

traffic originating at or destined to Delaware River points below Philadelphia

during the period under consideration. Coastwise receipts of crude oil at and

in the vicinity of Claymont and Marcus Hook averaged nearly three million tons

per year and in round figures an additional 430,000 tons per year was received

at Paulsboro. Large tonnages of refined petroleum products were also included

in the inbound tonnages received at the various Delaware River points belov

Philadelphia and other inbound commodities were coal, blackstrap and beet re

sidual, sulfur, sulfuric acid, and phosphate rock. Refined petroleum products

constituted the greater portion of the coastwise shipments from these ports.

INTERNAL AND LOCAL TRAFFIC

All of the localities covered by the 11 tables prepared for this report,

with the single exception of Bristol, Pa., received freight from internal points

beyond the Delaware River by way of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal but no

shipments were made to such internal points by way of the canal from any point

above Philadelphia.

The internal receipts and shipments by way of the canal

are shown separately and other tables show internal movements from one area to

another and the local traffic within a given area.
