HOISTING FACILITIES

Delaware River below Philadelphia

The Chester Tidewater Terminal (See Ref. No. 22, page 40) is the only important terminal on the Delaware River below Philadelphia at which heavy-lift equipment has been provided for public use. The facilities at this terminal include a gasoline-operated locomotive crane with a 40-foot reach and a capacity of 15 tons at 12-foot radius and a steam locomotive crane with a 60-foot reach and a capacity of 40 tons at 12-foot radius.

Many other terminal operators maintain hoisting machinery exclusively for their own use. One crane at the Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. plant has a maximum lifting capacity of 120 tons, which can be taken at a radius of 60 feet or 35 feet over the side of the pier. The pivot of this crane is 25 feet from the stringpiece, and as the crane has a maximum reach of 110 feet, it can reach 85 feet overside. The companies maintaining heavy-lift machinery and the reference numbers under which their terminals and equipment are described are listed below:

The cranes at the Trenton Marine Terminal (See Ref. No. 19, page 62 ) are the only hoisting facilities for public use at water front localities above Philadelphia. Two full portal, traveling gantry cranes are available, each of which has a capacity of 25 tons at a radius of 15 feet and a maximum reach of 40 feet. In addition to the gantry cranes, there is a gasoline-operated tractor crane with

a 30-foot boom, which can lift 12 tons at a radius of 12 feet, as well as cranes with smaller lift capacities.

Ports below Philadelphia.--Chester is the only locality on the Delaware River below Philadelphia at which storage warehouses are available. The 9 buildings at the Chester Tidewater Terminal are used for storing paper manufactures, woodpulp, iron and steel manufactures, cork, and general merchandise. These buildings are the only water front warehouses, the fireproof warehouse operated by Headley's Express & Storage Co. being about 2 miles from the terminal.

Ports above Philadelphia.--The only public storage warehouses on the Delaware water front above Philadelphia are those operated by the Trenton Marine Terminals, Inc., and by the Anchor Warehouse Co. at Trenton. The storage facilities at the Trenton Marine Terminal consist of the 4 sheds designed for handling transit cargo. The two buildings of the Anchor Warehouse Co. at Trenton are 2 miles distant from the Trenton Marine Terminal.
