Philadelphia

There are 21 wharves at the several localities on the Delaware River above

Philadelphia.

These facilities consist of a wharf at Andalusia, Pa., for

receiving sulphur and shipping acid; a public wharf, a wharf for receiving coal

and fuel oil, and 2 wharves which are not in use at Burlington, N. J.; a wharf

for receiving pig iron and fuel oil and one oil-handling wharf at East Burling

ton, N. J.;

a public wharf and one used for receiving fuel oil and acid at

Bristol, Pa.; a wharf used in connection with an iron foundry and an oil wharf

at Florence, N. J.; a wharf at the privately-owned town of Roebling, Pa., for

use in connection with the wire cable plant operated there; one sand wharf and

one gravel wharf at Penn Manor, Pa.; a shipbreaking wharf and a fertilizer wharf

at Fieldsboro, N. J.; 2 oil wharves on Duck Island, Trenton, and 3 city-owned

terminals at the city of Trenton, N. J.

The Trenton Marine Terminal is the only one of the above facilities de

signed for handling general cargo.

It is a modern marginal wharf with a wide

apron and spacious transit sheds. Two full portal, traveling, revolving, steam

gantry cranes, 2 tractor cranes, a fork lift truck, 2 straddle trucks, and cargo

beans and cargo masts have been provided for handling traffic over this terminal.

The terminal has direct connections with the Pennsylvania Railroad, there being

2 surface tracks on the wharf apron and additional trackage back of the transit

sheds. At the time of this survey the terminal was being used only for storage.

The following table contains a detailed description of each terminal re

ferred to above. A map of the Delaware River from Philadelphia to Trenton is

published opposite page 103 of this report.

On page 103, there is a finding

list giving the name of each wharf, its location, and the reference number

under which it is described in the table and by which it may be located on the

map.
