technicians for the purpose of improving the understanding of mapping

programs and cartographic applications. The work is being done in response to requests from the U.S. Customs Service and the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), and will provide the latest available aerial photography and maps of the border. It will meet the IBWC's legislative requirement for updating map coverage on a 10-year cycle of the border formed along the Rio Grande and Colorado Rivers.

Attached to this statement is a listing of the various countries with which the Geological Survey has undertaken scientific activities, with a brief description of the types of these activities. I would be pleased to provide more detailed information on the international projects of the USGS if you wish.

Somewhat apart from the discussion of the international activities of the USGS, as they relate to individual countries or regions, is the upcoming International Geological Congress to be held in Washington, D.C., in 1989. The USGS is hosting this event, which will involve scientists from all over the world, and it happens that I am serving as the Secretary General of the Congress.

In summary, the Geological Survey has in the past and continues to be very active in working productively with other nations in the earth sciences. This concludes my prepared statement. I would be happy to respond to any questions you may have.
