Mofes. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his Moulders, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom, to order it and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth even for ever, the zeal of the Lord of Hofts will perform this.
Mordecai, Absalom. This is blasphemy. The Lord of Horts, the God of Israel, born a child: This is death by our law, and it was by this law Jesus Christ, for assuming this infinite title, luffered death.
Aaron, Eleazar. Are you so abandoned to accuse the scripture of blafphemy? your ignorance shames us. From the beginning it was never known that Ifrael ever had it in idea that her prophecs blafphemed.
Mordecai, Abfalom. You understand not, firs, what you would be at. Will you answer a civil question ? Under whose rod fell the prophets? Isaiah was fawn asunder, Jeremiah was chrown into a dungeon, and in like manner happened with the rest; so that not one but was hated by Ifrael. From this I will prove that Ifrael and her prophets were of opposite religions, which did not square, but was much out at the elbows.
Moses. Lift up your heads, you gates, and be you lift up, you everlatting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in. Who is the
King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates, even life them up, ve everlasting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in. Who is the King of Glory? The Lord of Holts. He is the King of Glory.
Aaron, Eleazar. You will not accuse the Royal Father of our Messiah of blasphemy. He speaks of the imm-nse glory Chrift should be honoured with, and positively avers that he is the Divinity:
Mordecai, Absalom. We declare Aaron and Eleazar guilty, with Moses, of blasphemy, and according to the high-priest, Caiphas, worihy of death,
Mofes. I proclaim and announce Jesus Chrift God and the promised Messiah, myself his creature and a Christian.
Aaron, Eleazar. Dear Rabbi, for the honour and cawe of our forefathers, retract those words, and do not fuffer these mischievous wranglers influence to warp reason and religion.
Moses. I have no cause against my nation so far from it, I would, and I think I speak my sentiments, offer my life to see my nation christian.
Mordecai, Abfalom. You need not fear qur influence over Rabbi Moses. You should rather be fearful of his two affociates, Luther and Calvin.
Mofes. There was little danger from either of you, as I at all vimes abhorrid mal-contents.
Joshua, Nebemiah. Six of us, dear Rabbi, formed a confederacy to confute the chriftian
tenets; but when we engaged, both scripture and reafon disarmed and compell:d us to yield. We therefore confefs ourselves vanquished, and with you affirm Christ our Lord and Melliah. We desire to put an end to this Conference, and repair to the christian priesthood for instruction.
Boy. It will be proper, before we break up the conference, to know the christian faith in the Godhead, Incarnation, Death and Resurrection of Christ. Here it is.
Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholic Faith ; which faith, except every one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the Catholic Faith is this :
That we worship one God in Trinity, and Tri; nity in Unity; neither confounding the persons,
not dividing the substance. For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one; the glory equal, the majesty co-eternal. Such as the Father is, fuch is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghoft. The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate, and the Holy Ghost uncreate. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Ghoft incomprehenlible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and he Holy Ghost eternal; and yet they are not three eternals, but one eternal. As also, there are not three incomprehensibles, nor three uncreated, but one uncreated, and one incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighảy, and the Holy Ghost almighty, and yet they are not three almighties, but one almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God, and yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Ghost is Lord, and yet not three Lords, but one Lord. For, as we are compelled by the christian verity to acknowledge every person by himself to be God and Lord, so are we forbidden by the Catholic Religion to say, there be three Gods, or three Lords. The Father is made of none; neither created, nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten. The Holy Ghost is of the Father, and of the Son, neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers, one Son, not three Sons, one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts. And in this Trinity none is afore, or after other; none is greater or less than another, but the whole three persons are co-eternal together and co-equal. So that in all things, as aforesaid, the Unity in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped. He therefore that will be saved, must thus think of the Trinity. Further. more, it is necessary to everlasting falvation, that he also believe the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess, that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man; God of the subitance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and man of the substance of his Mo. ther, born in the world ; Perfect God, and per
fect man, of reasonable soul, and human Acthi fubfiiting; equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead, and inferior to the Father, as touching his manhood. Who, although he be God and man, yet he is not two, but one Chrift; one, not by the conversion of the Godhead inro. fic sh, but by taking the manhood into God: one altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person. For as the reasonable foul and flesh is one man ; fo God and man is one Chrift, who suffered for our salvation, descended inco hell, role again the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, he fitterh on the right-hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies, and shall give account for their works. '1 hey that have done good, shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. This is the Catholic Faith ; which, except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved.
Moses. I confess myself your debtor, and that to you only, by the grace of God, I owe my conversion. Happy conference with your father and Calvin, when I called you in, to explain the christian teners. I heartily acquiesce and submit to the exposition of the christian faith, and all things the church of Christ commands. I am ready to attend you to the altar of Christ, there prustrate and implore affistance from the priest.
