when he told him that he would give him tables of stone, with the Ten Commandments written upon them, which he was to teach the people.

And Moses went up on the mount with Joshua, and the glory of the Lord abode upon the mount, and a cloud covered it six days.

On the seventh day God called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud, and Moses went up the mount through the cloud and was there for forty days and forty nights; and the children of Israel saw the glory of the Lord, like a bright fire burning on top of the mountain.

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them. It was to be made of the choicest wood, and to have blue and purple and scarlet curtains of the finest

silk.

A great amount of gold, silver, and brass would be needed, and God told Moses to ask the people to bring them, and whoever had an offering for the sanctuary was to be allowed to

bring it.

And they shall make an ark of shittim wood. This ark

was a

chest, made of wood, and then covered over with gold,

both inside and outside, so that the wood could not be seen.

When it was finished the tables of stone were to be placed inside of it.

There was a ring of gold at each corner of the ark, through which the poles were to be put when it was borne from place to place. A cover of pure gold called the mercy-seat was also to be made for the ark, with two golden cherubim, or angels, on top of it; one angel at each end. They were to face each other with their wings extended so that they covered the entire top of the ark.

They were also to make a table of wood covered with pure gold, and put a raised border on the edge, and a ring of gold at each corner. And all the vessels or dishes to be used on this table were to be of pure gold. And there was to be a beautiful golden candlestick with six branches, or arms, three on each side, to give light in the Holy Place.

God told Moses how the tabernacle should be made, and where and how the curtains should be hung. One curtain was called a veil, and was arranged so as to form two rooms. One of these rooms was to be called the most holy place, or Holy of Holies, and here the ark was to be placed with the cherubim upon it.

The court of the tabernacle was enclosed with posts or pillars of brass to which the large curtains of the tent were to be fastened.

The Lord told Moses that Aaron and his four sons should be priests. Aaron was to be called the high priest.

Beautiful garments were to be made for the priests out of the finest linen, richly embroidered in colors. The ephod, or short cloak to cover the shoulders and breast, was to be woven in one piece, with a hole in the centre for the head to pass through. It was fringed at either end, handsomely embroidered, and set with precious stones, and held in at the waist by a belt, or girdle. Over the ephod was worn a breastplate of pure gold on the front of which were the words HOLINESS TO THE LORD. And the high priest was to wear a mitre, or head-dress, made of fine linen, handsomely embroidered, held in place around the forehead by a band of gold on which were the words HOLINESS TO THE LORD.

The Lord told Moses to bring Aaron and his sons to the

door, and there he was to wash them with water, and put upon them the special garment made for the priests, the long coat that had sleeves and would cover him from head to foot, and over this the ephod, and the breastplate, and fasten them on at the waist with the curious girdle.

After this was done Moses was to pour oil on the heads of Aaron and his sons, as a sign that they had been set apart to do holy work.

And Aaron and his sons, the priests, were to offer up two

every day, one in the morning, the other in the evening, on the brass altar, for the sins of the people.

And the Lord told Moses to make another altar of wood covered with pure gold, on which Aaron was to burn incense every morning. It was to stand inside the Holy Place with the golden candlestick, and nothing was ever to be burned upon it but the purest incense, made from mixed spices. This incense was to be burnt twice a day; once in the morning,

and

again in the evening when the lamps are lighted. The smoke from this incense would rise upward even as our prayers Through the intercession of our great High Priest Jesus Christ,

rise to heaven, and was to teach that all things are of God and for God.

The Lord commanded Moses to make a laver, a great basin of brass, and to set it outside the tabernacle and near the brazen altar. This laver was to be kept filled with water, and there Aaron and his sons were to wash their hands and feet.

When the Lord had told Moses all these things, he gave into his hands the two tables of stone, on which were written the Ten Commandments.

Moses staid so long upon the mountain, that the children. of Israel thought that he did not intend to come back to them. So they went to Aaron and asked him to make idols for them to worship. Aaron should have turned their thoughts from such things, but instead of that he told the children of Israel to bring the golden earrings they had borrowed from the Egyptians, and he threw the gold in the fire and it came out in the shape of a calf. And Aaron set up an altar in front of it; and the next day being a feast day, set apart by the Lord, the people brought burnt offerings and peace offerings, and ate and drank and made merry.

When Joshua heard the shouts of the people he said to Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp. And Moses said it was not the noise of war but the sound of singing that he heard. And when he came near the camp, and saw the calf, and the dancing, he was so angry that he threw the tables of stone out of his hands, and they were broken in pieces at the foot of the mount. And he took the calf which they had made and burnt it in the fire, ground it to powder, and sprinkled it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

And Moses said unto Aaron, What did these people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?

And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot : thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.

For they said unto me, Make us gods which shall go before us for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them

break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

And he said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from

gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man hist brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.

And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up
