ointments to put on his body, as was the custom among the Jews. But they waited and rested on the Sabbath day. Christ had several times told his disciples and the people that after his death he would rise again on the third day.

And the chief priests and rulers of the Jews remembered this. Therefore they went to Pilate and told him that they had heard Jesus, whom they styled, That deceiver, say he would rise again from the dead the third day.

They requested him to give orders that the sepulchre should be watched and guarded. They were afraid that his disciples would come by night, and steal his body, and then declare that he had risen from the dead.

Pilate told them that they had soldiers at their disposal, and that they might make the tomb as secure as they pleased. They went, therefore, and sealed the stone fast to the rock,

and placed soldiers on guard to watch the place. Very early the next morning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, toward the dawn of the first day of the week while it was yet dark, went to the sepulchre, carrying sweet spices with which they intended to anoint our Lord's body. On the way their minds were exercised as to who would roll away the big stone from the mouth of the sepulchre. But there was a great earth

quake, and the angel of the Lord came down from heaven, and rolled back the stone from the door of the tomb, and sat upon it. The countenance of the angel was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. Those who watched the tomb, when they saw the angel, shook for fear, and became as dead men.

the sepulchre and found the stone rolled away from the door of the tomb. They went in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And, as they were much perplexed, two men stood by them in shining garments. The women were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth. And the angel said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? Fear not; he is not here, but is risen. See the place where they laid him. But go and tell his disciples and Peter that

he is risen from the dead, and will go before them into Galilee; ye shall see him there.

And the women trembled, and were amazed, and went out quickly and fled from the sepulchre. Yet with joy they ran to tell the disciples of the resurrection of Jesus. On the way

the Holy One met them and said, All hail! And they held him by the feet and worshipped him. Then the Lord told them not to fear, but to go and tell his brethren to depart into Galilee, and there they should see him. And the women
