SUPPOSE y Almanack may be worth the Money then hatt paid for is, had thou no other Advantage from it, than co find the Day of the Month, the remarkable Days, the Changes of the Mets, the Sand Moon's Rifier and Setting, and to foreknow the Tides and the Weather's Chefe, with other Aftronomics! Curiofities, I have yearly and conftantly prepared for thy Ufe and Entertainment, during now no two Revolutions of the Planet Jupiter. But I hope this is not all the Advantage chón het resped for with a View to the Improvement of thy Mind and thy Eate, I have conftantly in erfpero'd in every littis Vacancy, Moral Hinct, Wife Sayings, And Maxims of Thrift, tending to imprefo the Benefits arifing from He ey, Sobriety, Indufry and Frugality; which if thou hast duly oblerved, it is highly probable thou art wifer and ricber many fold more than the Penes my Labours have cot thee. Howbeit, I that not therefore mile my Price because thou art better able to pay ; bat being thankful for paft Favours, hall endeavour to make my little Bokmore wartby thy Regard, by adding to thofe Recipes which we:etatended for the Cure of the Mind, fome valuable Ones re garding the Wealth of the Body. They are recommended by the Skifful, and by fuccnfaful Practice. I with a Bleffing may attend.the font chem, Bell Happiness, being

Thy obliged Friend,

Coffefpondent requers I would give Place in ing Almonach to the following Remarks, on the Advantages that may arife from a more general Ufe of Qxes for Draft in the Province of Penafylvania s which chear fully comply with, boping it may be of Ufe.

UPPOSE (ys he) A. B. has two Sons to fattle en Farms, who must each be fapplied with a Team for Ploughing, Carting,

He purchases for C. D. Four Horfte, which, one with ano ther, are feven Years old, and cott faith,

In feven Years Time they will be a worn out, si to be worth but little, since it will take near as much Provender to feed them, as the Value of their Work; bat valuing them at one Helf, is

Now allowing they. Ghould all live, and be free from Lamenefs, which is very unlikely, the Lots to C. D. 2. Sa the Hortes only,

[ocr errors]

A. B. purcases for his other San, B. F. four Ozen, which will do the fame Work ea a Farm in the Year. as the four Horses, and they, one with another, are five Years old, and coft 6

each

In feven Years Time they will be twelve Years old, and will then fell to a Grozier for perhaps more Money, bat we will only fay as much, of which there is little Brudi,

[ocr errors]

He thereby faves all his firft Ceft in the Purchase; and in cafa.of Lemencfe or any fuch Accident, the Ox will always fell to the Gra Eier for the fund Mency he coft when the Horfe under ésch CireuzAkundes would be entirely useless and loft.

[ocr errors]

Befides, as it is well known, Oxen will work every Day on good Grafs or Hay only, and of that little more than Half what the Horfe eats; E. F. faves all the Oats, Rye or other Grain that manf be given to C. D's Horfea to keep them in working Order, and s1moft Huf the Hay, which will amount at leaf, for the four Horses, to 20 Year, and in feven Year, 6.140. 00

He alfo faves the Smith's Bill for Shoeing, Traces, S. and the Sadler Bill for Gears, &c. as all thofe Neceffaries for the Oxen can be made to the Farmer in rainy Weather, or in long Winter Nights when he can do no other Work.

Thai E. F.at 7 Years End (other Things supposed equal), will richer than C. D. by faving the firk Coft of his Team,

And by faving in the Keeping

fn the whole,

Befides the other mentioned Savings, and faving his Pääpre from being impoverished by the clofe Biting of the Horfer.

Suppofe farther, that fa Pennsylvania there are 20,000 Farmers that keep Teamo; If then all would go into this Practice, in fever Years after it became general, the Saving to the Province would be as follows, 20,000 Formers, multiplied by 164 Pounds,

no lefs then Three Millions, and Two Handret and: Klähty Thon fand Pounds. A vef Sun!

But by the prefent Practice of Hotfe Teams, sich of the 55,000 Fermera lofing 164 in feven Years, the Amount is Three Milli and Two Hundred and Eighty Thoufsad Pounds jet to the Province. The Difference is Six Millions Five Hundred and Simsy. Thenfand Pounds?

If this Practice of afing Oxen were general, Beef would be mere plenty, and great Sains of Money would be apt la. the Province that are now yearly carried out to purchofe Castle for our Tiya Cong fumption.

Confiderable Sums would be likewife kept in the krevjace that now are paid for foreign Hides and Leather. And grene Suma might be brought into the Province for Beef and Leather exported. Thefe Sums added to the Saving above stated, of Three Millions, Two Hundred and Eighty Thousand Pounda.for to the Differences Six Million Five Hundred and Sixty Thousand Pounds) would feen make the Province rich, and occafion fuch a Plenty of Money to carry on Bufinefs, as has not hitherto been experienced, even in the Times of greateft Liberty for ftriking a Paper Currency

It may be objected, That Oxen are flow io-Meion, and Horfer, moving quicker, difpatch more Work. Totily men have a Driver befides the Ploughman, That the Farmet cannot ride them on their neceffery Buhnefs, or to Places of Worhip; and that they are not fit to travel the Road in Waggons on jong journeys.

To which it is answered That if they are fomewhat flower than Horfes, in their Labour, they are more deady. That by proper Ma nagement in the Breaking, they may be taught to move much fafter than la commonly imagined; vis. by breaking the Yoke at firff with Horfe. That a Boy will do the Office of a Driver, tho' all Oxin do not require it. That a Farmer may always keep a Horfe or two for riding, which would be fufficient; whereas now many keep five or fix, and fome ten or twelve, according to their Quantity of Land And as to travelling the Road, As the Millers Teams do, Oxen are not propofed for their Ufe.

To thefe Obfervations, my Friend adds, That in a former Al manack I recommended the Propagation of Red Cedar Trees, as be ing a durable, Wood for Fencing Pots, . but he is of Opinion the round Leafd Locuft Tree would be more ferviceable, being equally lafting, growing more naturally, and in one third Part of the Time. This is fubmitted to Experience:
