The Farringdons had for several generations owned the great iron works and collieries in Mershire, the great coal district in the middle of England, generally known as the Black Country. They were Methodists, consequently the reader gets an insight in a friendly way to the "non-conformist conscience" which is quite amusing. There are character sketches also of Methodist men and women, apparently taken from life. Elisabeth Farringdon the dominant female character is young, pretty, witty, wilful, clever, and illogical, and altogether blind for many years to the sincere love of the most desirable man of her circle. Her life is full of surprises. A glimpse is again offered of Isabel Carnaby and a few other characters of former novels.
