THE CITY OF NEW YORK-OFFICE OF THE CITY CHAMBERLAIN, Hon. BIRD S. COLER, Comptroller: } DEAR SIR-I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your circular letter dated July 21, 1898, and as therein requested present the following estimate of the amount required to conduct the business of the City Chamberlain's Office for the year 1899: For the year 1899 Contingencies Chamberlain's Office. Salary of Chamberlain, as per section 196, chapter 378, Laws of 1897... $500 00 12,000 00 26,300 00 $38,800 00 Allowed for the year 1898 Contingencies Chamberlain's Office... Salary of Chamberlain, as per section 196, chapter 378, Laws of 1897. $1,000 00 12,000 00 32,450 00 $45,450 00 To perform the duties required of this office on account of the merging of the cities, I found it necessary to consolidate several of the positions provided for in the original estimate, and to abolish others. This enables me to leave an unexpended balance of about $10,000 of the Salary account and $500 of the amount allowed for Contingent Expenses for the year 1898. My estimate for the year 1899 will be $38,800, which is $6,650 less than the amount allowed for this year. I would like to add that the fees earned by me on Court Funds, and turned over regularly to the City Treasury, average about $1,000 per month. Herewith I inclose a comparative statement showing the several amounts allowed for 1898, and what is required for 1899, as requested in your circular. LAW DEPARTMENT.
