HE seven chapters included in this book are an abridgment of ten comprised in its complete form.

conditions compelled the omission of a second chapter on Poe and of two others on the work and career of Whistler.

The aim of the work will be clear to all who share the author's conviction that the world has long owed an unacknowledged debt to the genius of the Southern States of the American Uniona debt whose nature and extent he here attempts to indicate.
