Bucks, born 21 Aug. 1791; succeeded his father, William-Robert, the late duke, 20 Oct. 1804: married, 16 June 1818, Charlotte-Augusta Stanhope, youngest da. of Charles, earl of Harrington, and has issue,- 1. The family of Fitzgerald derives its origin from Otho, or Other, a powerful English baron in the time of king Edward the Confessor, whose son, Walter Fitz Other, was, at the general survey of England, 1078, castellan of Windsor. From the same Walter also descended the families of Windsor, Carew, FitzMaurice, Gerard, and many others. The oldest title of honour used by this family was that of barons of Offaley, by which Gerald Fitz-Maurice, great-grandson of Walter Fitz Other, was designated as early as 1205; and his descendant in the sixth degree,

JOHN FITZ THOMAS, was created earl of Kildare, 14 May 1316, 10th Edward II., and d. the same year: from him the title descended as follows:

THOMAS FITZ JOHN, 2d earl, son of the 1st, d. 1328.

RICHARD FITZ THOMAS, 3d earl, son of the 2d, d. 1329, and was succeeded by his brother,

MAURICE FITZ THOMAS, 4th earl, d. 1390.

GERALD FITZ MAURICE, 5th earl, son of the 4th, d. 1410, and was succeeded by his son,

JOHN FITZ GERALD, 6th earl, whose son,

THOMAS FITZ GERALD, 7th earl, was attainted 1467, but restored again by act of parliament, and d. 1477, leaving, besides other issue, a son,

Sir GERALD Fitzgerald, 11th earl, was half-brother of the 10th earl, restored in blood by queen Mary, and was father of HENRY and WILLIAM, 12th and 13th earls; on the death of the latter of whom, unm. 1599, the title devolved on his first-cousin, GERALD, 14th earl, father of

GERALD, 15th earl, who d. unm. 1620, and was succeeded by his first-cousin,

GEORGE, 16th earl, m. Joan, da. of Richard Boyle, earl of Cork, and d. 1660, having had issue WENTWORTH, 17th earl, and Robert, father of the 19th earl.

WENTWORTH, 17th earl, m. Elizabeth, da. of John Holles, earl of Clare, and dying 1663, was succeeded by his only son, JOHN, 18th earl, twice m., but d. without surviving issue, 1707, when the title devolved on his first cousin,

ROBERT, 19th earl, m. Mary, da. of William O'Bryen, 3d earl of Inchiquin, by whom (who d. Feb. 1780) he had many children, but only two survived their infancy, viz., 1. JAMES, 20th earl and 1st duke.

2. MARGARET, m. Wills Hill, 1st marquess of Downshire. The earl d. 1744, and was succeeded by his only son,

JAMES, 1st duke, a lieut.-gen. in the army, and master-gen. of the ordnance in Ireland; b. 29 May 1722, and succeeded his father as earl of Kildare, 20 Feb. 1744, was created a peer of Great Britain, 21 Feb. 1747, by the title of viscount Leinster, of Taplow; on 3 March 1671, was raised to the dignity of marquess of Kildare; and on 16 Nov. 1766, was further advanced to the dignity of duke of Leinster; m., 7 Feb. 1747, AmeliaMary, da. of Charles Lennox, 2d duke of Richmond and Lennox, and by her (who after his grace's death m., 2dly, William Ogilvy, esq., and d. 27 March 1814) had issue,

1. GEORGE, earl of Offaley, b. 15 Jan. 1748, and d. 26 Sept. 1765. 2. WILLIAM-ROBERT, 2d duke.

3. CHARLES-JAMES, b. 30 June 1756, created, 20 Oct. 1800, baron LECALE, of Ardglass, but d. s.p. 17 Feb. 1810, when that title became extinct.

4. HENRY, b. 30 July 1761, m., 4 Aug. 1791, Charlotte, now baroness de Ross (see BARONESS DE ROSS, in the Peerage of England).

5. EDWARD, b. 15 Oct. 1763, m., Dec. 1792, Pamela, natural da. of the duke of Orleans; he d. 4 June 1798, falling a victim to his unfortunate resistance, on being apprehended upon a charge of high treason, (for which he was attainted, but the attainder was reversed in 1819,) leaving issue,
