GEORGE-WILLIAM CAMPBELL, DUKE, MARQUESS, and EARL of ARGYLL, Marquess of Lorn and Kintyre, Earl of Campbell and Cowall, Viscount Lochow and Glenila, Lord of Inverary, Mull, Morven, and Tyrie; Scots honours: and Baron Sundridge and Hamilton, in the Peerage of England; Hereditary Master of the King's Household, Admiral of the Western Isles, Keeper of Dunoon Castle, and of Duastafnage and Carrick, State Counsellor to the King for Scotland, Keeper of the Great Seal in Scotland, and Hereditary Sheriff co. Argyll: born 22 Sept. 1768; succeeded his father, John, the late duke, 24 May 1806; married, 29 Nov. 1810, Caroline-Elizabeth Villiers, da. of George, 4th earl of Jersey (whose former marriage with Henry-William, marquess of Anglesey, K.G., had been dissolved by the Scots court).

GILLESPIE CAMPBELL, a gentleman of Anglo-Norman lineage, acquired the lordship of Lochow, by marriage with the heiress of the former possessors, in the 11th century. His descendant Sir COLIN, surnamed More, or Great, was one of those distinguished persons who were summoned, by Robert Bruce, to Berwick, in Aug. 1291, when king Edward I., of England, came there, to decide the dispute between him and John Baliol, for the succession to the crown of Scotland. He m. a lady of the family of Sinclair, and had issue Neil, his successor, and Donald, ancestor of the earls of Loudoun.

Sir DUNCAN CAMPBELL, great-great-grandson of Neil, was first of the family who assumed the title of Argyll, and was created a lord of parliament, 1445; m. Marjory, 2d da. of Robert, duke of Albany, regent of Scotland, and had issue,

Sir Duncan d. 1453, and was succeeded by his grandson,

The earl d. 1638, and was succeeded by his eldest son,

ARCHIBALD, 8th earl, created marquess of Argyll in 1641. He contributed much to the reception and coronation of Charles II., and, 1 Jan. 1650, placed the crown on his head at Scone; but, after the restoration in 1661, he was accused by the earl of Middleton of complying with Oliver Cromwell in the death of Charles I.; for which he was condemned by parliament, and, on 27 May 1661, was beheaded at the Market Cross of Edinburgh;

ARCHIBALD, 9th earl, who, in 1663, was restored to the title of earl of Argyll; in 1681 he was condemned to death for high treason, but escaped from his confinement in the disguise of a lady's page, and fled to Holland, where he collected some forces, and made a landing in Argyleshire in 1685; when, being defeated and again made prisoner, he was beheaded at the Market Cross, on his former sentence, 30 June 1685. The earl m. Mary Stewart, da. of James, earl of Murray, and had issue,

ARCHIBALD, 1st duke, was acknowledged as earl of Argyll by the parliament, before they took off the attainder against his father, and created duke of Argyll, to him and his heirs male whatsoever, 23 June 1701; m. Elizabeth, da. of sir Lionel Tollemache, of Helmingham, co. Suffolk, bart., (ancestor to Lionel, earl of Dysart, see that title,) and by her (who d. 9 May 1735) left issue,

The duke d. 1703, and was succeeded by his eldest son,

1. CAROLINE, m., 1st, Francis, earl of Dalkeith, eldest son of Francis, 2d duke of Buccleuch; and 2dly, to the right hon. Charles Townshend, 2d son of Charles, 3d viscount Townshend, and brother to George, 1st marquess Townshend; her ladyship was created baroness Greenwich, in England, and d. in 1794, leaving issue.

Anne, b. 29 June 1756, m., 1st, Richard Wilson, of Tyrone, in Ireland, esq., by whom she had issue; and 2dly, John Tempest, of Lincolnshire,

esq.

His grace dying in Nov. 1743, the English titles of duke and earl of Greenwich, and baron of Chatham, became extinct; but he was succeeded in his other titles by his brother,

ARCHIBALD, 3d duke, who was created a peer of Scotland, by the titles of lord Oransay, Dunoon, and Arase; also viscount and earl of Isla, 29 Oct. 1706, which titles, on his death without issue, became extinct. He m. the da. of Whitfield, esq., paymaster of the marines, but by her (who d. in 1723) he had no issue; and his grace dying 15 April 1761, was succeeded by his cousin,

Roscommon, esq., (by the hon. Bridget Bourke, 3d da. of Theobald, 6th viscount Mayo,) and had issue by her, (who was created a peeress of Great Britain, 20 May 1776, by the title of baroness Hamilton, of Hambledon, co.
