York, and Baron Tyndale, co. Northumberland; English honours; born 25 Nov. 1806; succeeded his father, Charles-William-Henry, the late duke, 20 April 1819.

The family of Scott traces its descent from Richard le Scot, of Murdieston, co. Lanark, who was one of the Scotch barons that swore fealty to king Edward I. 1296. His descendants afterwards became lords of Branxholm and Buccleuch, but were not ennobled till 1606, when sir WALTER Scott was created lord Scott of Buccleuch; his son WALTER was further advanced, 1619, to the dignity of earl of Buccleuch, and dying 1633, was succeeded by his only son,

WA VALTER, 2d earl, who d. 1651, leaving only 2 das., 1. Mary, who, on her father's death, became countess of Buccleuch; m. Walter Scott, of the house of Scott, of Harden, but d. 1661, with. out issue, whereupon the title devolved on her only sister,

ANNE, who m. James, duke of Monmouth, (natural son of Charles II.,) who, on the marriage, adopted the surname of Scott. In 1673 his grace was created, jointly with his wife, duke and duchess of Buccleuch, earl and countess of Dalkeith, baron and baroness Whitechurch and Eskdale, with remainder

to the heirs of their bodies. Upon his unfortunate decease, the English honours of duke of Monmouth, earl of Doncaster, and baron Tyndale, became forfeited, as also his Scots honours of duke of Buccleuch: but the attainder did not affect the peerages enjoyed by his duchess in her own right, being duchess of Buc cleuch by creation, and countess of Buccleuch by descent from her ancestors. Their issue was,

1. JAMES, earl of Dalkeith, who m. Henrietta, da. of Law. rence Hide, earl of Rochester, and d. 1705, leaving issue by her, FRANCIS, 2d duke.

2. HENRY, who, in March 1706, was created earl of Deloraine, viscount Hermitage, and baron Scott, of Goldylands, and dying 1731, was succeeded by his son, Francis, 2d earl, who d. 1739, and was succeeded by his brother, Henry, who d. 1740, and was succeeded by his son, Henry, 4th earl, on whose death, without issue, 1807, the above titles became extinct.

The duchess m., 2dly, Charles, 3d lord Cornwallis, and dying 6 Feb. 1732, was succeeded in her titles by her grandson,

FRANCIS, 2d duke; b. 11 Jan. 1694; restored to the titles of earl of Doncaster, and baron Scott, of Tyndale, by act of parliament 1743; m., 5 April 1720, Jane, eldest da. of James Douglas, 2d duke of Queensberry, (through which marriage, her grandson, HENRY, 3d duke of Buccleuch, inherited also the duchy of Queensberry,) and had issue by her, (who d. 31 Aug. 1729,)

FRANCIS, earl of Dalkeith, b. 19 Feb. 1721, m., 2 Oct. 1742, Caroline, eldest da. and co-h. of John Campbell, 2d duke of Argyll and Greenwich, and d. 1750, leaving issue by her, (who m., 2dly, the right hon. Charles Townshend, brother of George, 1st marquess Townshend, and was created baroness Greenwich, with remainder to her issue male by her 2d husband, but d, without such issue, 1794,)

HENRY, 3d duke, K.G.; b. 2 Sept. 1746; succeeded, on the death of William, 4th duke of Queensberry, without issue, in 1810, (see marquess of Queensberry,) to the titles of duke of Queensberry, marquess of Dumfries-shire, earl of Drumlanrig and Sanquhar, viscount Nith, Thortholwold and Ross, lord Douglas of Kinmont, Middlebie and Dornock, pursuant to a special limitation in a patent dated 1706, and letters of entail consequent thereupon, executed by James, 2d duke of Queensberry, m., 20 March 1767, Elizabeth, da. of George, duke of Montagu, and by her (who d. 21 Nov. 1827, aged 85) had issue, CHARLES-WILLIAM-HENRY, 4th duke.

According to Chalmers, the territory of Gordon, in Berwickshire, anciently of great extent, was granted, during the reign of king David I., to an Anglo-Norman settler, who assumed from it the name of Gordon. In the reign of Robert I., sir Adam de Gordon obtained a grant of the barony of Strathbogie, co. Atholl; his great-great-grandson, sir Adam Gordon, of Huntley, was killed at Homildon, 1402, leaving an only da. and h., m. to Alexander Seton, 2d son of sir William Seton, of Seton. Their eldest son and h.,

ALEXANDER SETON, lord of Gordon, assumed the surname of Gordon, and was created, 22 Jan. 1449-50, earl of Huntley. He was thrice m.; by his 2d wife he had issue sir Alexander, ancestor of the Setons of Touch; but the earldom of Huntley was entailed on his issue by his 3d wife, Elizabeth, da. of William, lord Crichton, high chancellor of Scotland, by whom he was father of

GEORGE, 4th earl, was son of John, lord Gordon, eldest son of the 3d earl, who d. in his father's lifetime. He m. Elizabeth, sister of William Keith, 4th earl marischal, and was father of George, 5th earl, whose only son,

GEORGE, 6th earl, was created, 17 April 1599, marquess of Huntley; m. Henrietta, eldest da. of Esme Stewart, duke of Lennox, and dying 13 June 1636, was succeeded by his eldest son,

GEORGE, 2d marquess, created, 29 April 1632, viscount Aboyne, with remainder, on his death or succession to his father's honours, to his 2d son, James; m. Anne, da. of Archibald Campbell, 7th earl of Argyll, and by her (who d. 14 June 1638) had issue,

1. GEORGE, killed at the battle of Alford, 1649, unm.

2. JAMES, became viscount Aboyne on his father's succession to the title of marquess of Huntley, d. unm. 1649.
