PREFACE.

THE production of another work of this character whilst one or two already existed, may at first appear to be presumptuous, or, at the best, unnecessary. Without attempting to detract from the labours of my predecessors, I think that the present will be found to possess advantages for those who have not had the benefit of a classical education. The Terms are written in their Anglicised forms, under which they are commonly employed; and the derivations are recovered from the mysticism of a Greek alphabet. Both these innovations, it is confidently hoped, will commend the work to such of the operative classes as are cultivating the study of BOTANY. In the following pages will be found a complete Glossary of all the technicalities of the science in present use. Such only have been excluded as are either obsolete, or, not being special, may be found
