THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR BUILDING was designed primarily for the
practical purposes of the scientific work of the Department rather than merely for artistic
appearance. The plans were drawn in the office of the Supervising Architect, with the
assistance of an outside architect. Congress appropriated the sum of $2,500,000 for the
construction of the building, but the construction cost less than that sum. The foregoing
view is of the building at the intersection of F and 19th Streets.
