1 Percentage of value of primary products to total shipments, including primary and secondary products, and miscellaneous receipts for contract and commission work on materials owned by others, scrap and salable refuse, repair, etc.

? Percentages not meaningful because total value of primary products shipped by specified industry includes a significant amount of duplication.

Relationships not meaningful because of the predominance of miscellaneous receipts, particularly receipts for contract and commission work on materials owned by others.

Value of finishing own goods by this industry as a percent of value of finishing of own goods by all industries.

5 Percentage based on quantity of yarn production rather than value of shipments.

6 An unknown amount of receipts for toll operations are included in primary products.

7 These are minimum percentage figures. The exact percentage cannot be shown without disclosing figures for individual companies.

8 Percentages not meaningful because total value of primary products shipped by the specified industry does not reflect the larger expenditures made by establishments during the year for research, design, and developmental work.

9

• Percentages not meaningful because of the large proportion of receipts for repair work to total value of shipments.

APPENDIX D

DERIVATION OF 1939 INDUSTRY DATA COMPARABLE WITH

1947 CENSUS INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATIONS

The difference in the scope of manufacturing between 1939 and 1947 is described in the General Explanations, Section 8, Change in scope between 1939 and 1947. In 1947 the manufacturing division comprises 453 industries which are included in 144 industry groups and 20 industry major groups; in 1939 there were 446 industries in 127 industry groups and 20 industry major groups.

Following are the more important changes within the manufacturing division between the 1939 and 1947 census industrial classification systems: (a) merger of regular and contract textile mill and apparel industries; (b) establishment of a major group for lumber and wood products from the 1939 major group for lumber and timber basic products and part of the major group for furniture and finished lumber products; (c) breakdown of new chemical industries from broader 1939 industries, such as the Drugs and Chemicals and Chemicals, Not Elsewhere Classified, Industries; (d) rearrangement of industries of the 1939 major groups for iron and steel and their products, and for nonferrous metals and their products, to constitute the new 1947 major groups for primary metal industries, and for fabricated metal products (except machinery and transportation equipment); (e) combination of the two 1939 major groups for automobiles and equipment, and for other transportation equipment, to form a single major group for all transportation equipment; (f) establishment of a separate major group for professional, scientific, and controlling instruments, photographic and optical goods; watches and clocks, derived mainly from the 1939 major group for miscellaneous industries; (g) breakdown into more detailed industry classifications of some of the 1939 industries, mainly: electric generating, distribution, and industrial apparatus; radios, radio tubes, and phonographs; communication equipment; electric appliances; sawmills,

veneer mills, and cooperage stock mills; bookbinding and related industries; footwear; and aircraft and parts.

The table below shows the 1939 census industries or parts of retabulated 1939 census industries equivalent to each of the 453 industry classifications used in the 1947 census. It shows how the 1939 statistics for industry classifications comparable with those used in the 1947 census were derived from a retabulation of the 1939 census schedules. For additional details regarding the comparability of 1939 and 1947 industry classifications and statistics, see the text for each of the 1947 industries in the Industry Volume. The first column lists the 1947 census industry code; the second column, the equivalent 1939 census industry code (asterisked code means only part of the 1939 industry is included). The "Title" column shows the 1947 census industry short title corresponding to each of the 1947 census industry codes. Where a 1947 industry classification is the same as that for 1939, only the 1947 short industry title is shown, even though in some cases, it might differ from the 1939 industry title. Where a 1947 census industry is not identical with a single 1939 industry classification, the equivalent whole or part 1939 census industries are indented below the corresponding 1947 census industry titles, and the following details are shown: (a) titles (many are abbreviated) of the 1939 census industries from which data comparable with 1947 census industry classifications were derived, and (b) where applicable, a bracket annotating the specific part of the 1939 industry covered, followed by (c) parentheses containing reference to other 1947 census industries into which the original 1939 census industry was distributed. The following abbreviations are used: n.a. Not available; n.m.-Nonmanfacturing; n.e.c. -Not elsewhere classified.
