TABLE 2.-NUMBER OF ESTABLISHMENTS PERFORMING SELECTED METALWORKING OPERATIONS, [This table shows the number of establishments maintaining the metalworking operation specified, classified by the number of production workers usually employed in the operation during 1947] Heat treating or annealing of metals for production purposes 4 Distribution by number of production workers in the operation TABLE 2.-NUMBER OF ESTABLISHMENTS PERFORMING SELECTED METALWORKING OPERATIONS, 100 ing and polish 100 other hot-dip Total 1-4 5-19 20-49 50-99 and 100 ing in- Total 1-4 5-19 20-49 50-99 and dustry 3 over coating indus over over TABLE 2.—NUMBER OF ESTABLISHMENTS PERFORMING SELECTED METALWORKING OPERATIONS, TABLE 2.-NUMBER OF ESTABLISHMENTS PERFORMING SELECTED METALWORKING OPERATIONS, NOTE: For the following industries-foundries, forgings, electroplating, galvanizing, and machine shops-there were Census industries comparable to the operation where the metalworking operations inquiry was not included on the reporting form. The number of establishments in these industries is shown by State in separate columns in the above table. Data on distribution by size of establishments in the industry (based on total employment) may be obtained by reference to Chapter III, table 1 of the Summary Volume (Volume I) or by reference to the specific industry in the Industry Volume (Volume II, Part 2). However, the size categories in these references are based on total employment in the establishment and not the number of production workers in the specified operation. The metalworking operations inquiry for the foundry industries was abbreviated and did not include the foundry (except die casting) or die casting portions of the inquiry. This column, therefore, shows the number of establishments classified in the foundry industries in each State. The establishments included in this column may have foundries (except die casting) or die casting operations or both. 2 Does not include a small number of nonferrous forge shops classified in Primary metals industries, n.e.c., industry 3399. 3 These data include all establishments in the Plating and Polishing Industry. Most of the establishments in this industry perform electroplating operations. Industry 3399, Primary metal industries, n.e.c., includes establishments whose primary activity is heat treating or annealing of metals and the reporting form for this industry did not include the metalworking operations inquiry. A special review of the establishments in 3399 was made and those which indicated that they performed heat treating or annealing operations were included in this table. APPENDIXES A.
