VOLUME I-NATALITY

Section 1. Natality-Rates and Characteristics

Summary tables showing trends in period and cohort fertility measures and characteristics of live births including
race, age of mother, age of father, live-birth order, sex, month of birth, and marital status of mother. Detailed
frequency data for 1989 are shown for these characteristics as well as for attendant, place of delivery, interval
since last live birth, educational attainment of mother and father, month of pregnancy prenatal care began,
number of prenatal visits, birth weight, period of gestation, plurality, Apgar score, Hispanic origin of parents,
medical risk factors, alcohol and tobacco use by mother, maternal weight gain, obsteric procedures performed,
method of delivery, abnormal conditions of the newborn, and congenital anomalies of the infant.
Detailed frequency tabulations for each State, and in some cases for each metropolitan area and other
geographic areas of the United States. Data are shown by race, sex, age of mother, live-birth order, place of birth
of mother, month of birth, Hispanic origin of parents, attendant at birth, marital status of mother, month of
pregancy prenatal care began, number of prenatal visits, plurality of birth, and birth weight.

Section 2. Natality-Local Area Statistics

Frequency tabulations by place of residence and occurrence for each State, county, and city with a population of 10,000 or more by race.

Section 3. Natality-Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands (U.S.), and Guam

Trends in the crude birth rate. Frequency tabulations by race, sex, month, age of mother, age of father, live-birth order, place of delivery, birth weight, marital status of mother, educational attainment of mother, month of pregnancy prenatal care began, Apgar score, place of residence and occurrence, medical risk factors, alcohol and tobacco use by mother, maternal weight gain, obstetric procedures performed, method of delivery, abnormal conditions, and congenital anomalies of the infant.

Text discussion of the source, classification, and quality of the natality statistics published in this volume.
Includes population tables for computing vital rates.
