STATEMENT OF DAVID LYNN, ARCHITECT OF THE CAPITOL

RELOCATION OF THE JOHN MARSHALL STATUE

Mr. WOODRUM. Mr. Lynn, you submit two items in Senate Document No. 236. The first under the head of "Relocation of the John Marshall Statue," you submit the following item:

To provide for the removal of the statue of John Marshall to a new location to be selected by the United States Supreme Court within or near the United States Supreme Court Building, personal and other services, structural changes and incidental expenses, pursuant to Public Resolution Numbered 78, Seventy-sixth Congress, entitled "Joint resolution authorizing the removal of the statue of John Marshall from its present site on the Capitol Grounds to a new site in proximity to the Supreme Court Building," approved June 8, 1940, $3,000, to be expended by the Architect of the Capitol.

Mr. LYNN. Under date of June 18, 1940, an estimate in the amount of $3,000 was submitted by the Architect of the Capitol through the Bureau of the Budget in order to provide for the relocation of the statue of John Marshall from its present site on the Capitol Grounds to a new site within or near the United States Supreme Court Building; the new site to be selected by the Court in accordance with the provisions of Public Resolution No. 78, Seventy-sixth Congress, approved June 8, 1940, authorizing the relocation of the statue.

The Court has approved the recommendation of the Commission of Fine Arts that the statue be relocated in the entrance hall of the United States Supreme Court Building and in order to place the statue within the building it will be necessary to reinforce the present floor structure by the installation of two additional 10-inch steel I beams, at an estimated cost of $1,000. In addition to this amount, the cost of dismantling, moving and reassembling of the statue is estimated at $2,000; or a total estimated cost of $3,000.

The statue is of bronze with marble base. The statue weighs approximately 2 tons and the marble base without brick backing
