Jefus anfwered and faid unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou waft under the fig-tree, I faw thee. 49 Nathanael anfwered and faith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Ifrael. 50 Jefus answered and faid unto him, Because I faid unto thee, I faw thee under the fig-tree, believeft thou? thou fhalt fee greater things than these. 51 And he faith unto him, Verily verily I fay unto you, Hereafter ye fhall fee heaven open, and the angels of God afcending and defçending upon the Son of man. CHAP. XI. Now 'OW a certain man was fick named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her fifter Martha. 2 It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whofe brother Lazarus was fick. 3 Therefore his fifters fent unto him, faying, Lord, behold, he whom thou loveft is fick. 4 When Jefus heard that, he faid, This fickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. 5 Now Jefus loved Martha, and her fifter, and La zarus. 6 When he had heard therefore that he was fick, he abode two days ftill in the fame place where he was. 7 Then after that saith he to his difciples, Let us go into Judea again. 8 His difciples fay unto him, Mafter, the Jews of late fought to ftone thee; and goest thou thither again? 9 Jefus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk' in the day, he ftumbleth not, because he feeth the light of this world. 10 But if a man walk in the night he ftumbleth, because there is no light in him. II These things faid he : and after that he faith unto them, Our friend Lazarus fleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of fleep. 12 Then faid his difciples, Lord, if he fleep, he shall do well. 13 Howbeit Jefus fpake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of reft in fleep. 14 Then faid Jefus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your fakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe: nevertheless let us go unto him. 16 Then faid Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow difciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. 17 Then when Jefus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerufalem, about fifteen furlongs off: 19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. 20 Then Martha as foon as fhe heard that Jefus was coming, went and met him: but Mary fat ftill in the house. 21 Then faid Martha unto Jefus, Lord, if thou hadft been here, my brother had not died. 22 But I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt afk of God, God will give it thee. 23 Jefus faith unto her, Thy brother shall rife again. 24 Martha faith unto him, I know that he fhall rife again in the refurrection at the last day. 25 Jefus faid unto her, I am the refurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet fhall he live: 26 And whofoever liveth and believeth in me, fhall never die. Believeft thou this? 27 She faith unto him, Yea, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which fhould come into the world. 28 And when he had fo faid, fhe went her way, and called Mary her fifter fecretly, faying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. 29 As foon as she heard that, the arofe quickly, and came unto him. 30 Now Jefus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they faw Mary that she rose up haftily and went out, followed her, faying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. 32 Then when Mary was come where Jefus was, and faw him, fhe fell down at his feet, faying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33 When Jefus therefore faw her weeping, and the Jews Jews alfo weeping which | ftand by I faid it, that they came with her, he groaned may believe that thou haft in the fpirit, and was troubled, -34 And faid, Where have ye laid him? They faid unto him, Lord, come and fee. 35 Jefus wept. 36 Then faid the Jews, Behold, how he loved him! 37 And fome of them faid, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caufed that even this man fhould not have died? 38 Jefus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the grave: it was a cave, and a tone lay upon it. 39 Jefus faid, Take ye away the ftohe. Martha, the fifter of him that was dead, faith unto him, Lord, by this time he ftinketh: for he hath been dead four days. 40 Jefus faith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 41 Then they took away the ftone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jefus lifted up his eyes, and faid, Father, I thank thee that thou haft heard me. fent me. 43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jefus faith unto them, Loofe him, and let him go. 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had feen the things which Jefus did, believed on him. 46 But fome of them went their ways to the Pharifees, and told them what things Jefus had done. 47 Then gathered the chief priefts and the Pharifees a council, and faid, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. 48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans fhall come and take away both our place and nation. 49 And one of them named Caiaphas, being the high priest that fame year, faid unto them, Ye know nothing at all, 42 And I knew that thou 50 Nor confider that it is heareft me always but be-expedient for us, that one caufe of the people which man fhould die for the people, and |
