ETTER is the poor

6 Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he purfueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own foul: he that keepeth understanding fhall find good.

21 There are many devices in a man's heart; neverthelefs, the counfel of the Lord, that shall stand.

22 The defire of man is his kindness and a poor man is better than a lyar.

23 The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that bath it fhall abide fatisfied; he fhall not be vifited with evil.

24 A flothful man hideth his hand in his bofom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

25 Smite a fcorner, and the fimple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

26 He that wasteth his father, and chafeth away his mother, is a fon that causeth fhame, and bringeth reproach.

27 Ceafe, my fon, to hear the inftruction that caufeth to err from the words of knowledge.

28 An ungodly witness fcorneth judgment; and the mouth of the wicked devour eth iniquity.

CHAP. XX.

INE is a mocker, ftrong drink is raging: and whofoever is deceived thereby is not wife.

2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whofo provoketh him to anger finneth against his own foul.

3 It is an honour for a man to ceafe from ftrife: but every fool will be meddling.

4 The fluggard will not plow by reafon of the cold; therefore fhall he beg in harveft, and have nothing.

5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

6 Moft men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

7 The juft man walketh in his integrity: his children are bleffed after him.

8 A king that fitteth in the throne of judgment fcattereth away all evil with his eyes.

9 Who can fay, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my fin?

25 The defire of the flothful killeth him; for his hands refufe to labour:

26 He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and fpareth

not.

27 The facrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind? 28 A falfe witnefs fhall perifh but the man that heareth fpeaketh conftantly. 29 A wicked man hardeneth his face but as for the upright, he directeth his way.

30 There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counfel against the Lord.

31 The horfe is prepared against the day of battle: but fafety is of the Lord.

CHAP. XXII.

Good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than filver and gold.

2 The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all.

3 A prudent man forefeeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the fimple pass on, and are punished.

4 By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, . honour, and life.

5 Thorns and fnares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his foul fhall be far from them.

6 Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is fervant to the lender.

8 He that foweth iniquity fhall reap vanity, and the rod of his anger fhall fail.

9 He that hath a bountiful eye fhall be bleffed: for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
