The Author afterwards found that it might be completed in one, though the number of pages would necessarily exceed that of either of his former volumes. This course, with the assent of his excellent publishers, he has not hesitated to adopt, as more advantageous to his readers than, on a system of bookmaking, a publication in two volumes of some four hundred pages each, of which the benefit must have been entirely his own. This consideration will, he trusts, satisfactorily account for the volume being somewhat more bulky than is generally desirable. Having unavoidably too much matter for one volume, and perhaps scarcely enough for two, it would have been no difficult task to have padded out a second with an Appendix; but he thinks that he has chosen the less of two evils. b |
