life. His person and manners were so graceful and engaging that he was warmly beloved by his friends, and esteemed even by his enemies; and when he made his appearance in Scotland, he drew on himself the attention of all Europe. He is said to have always acted with remarkable humanity and greatness of soul; and his success was greater than could have been expected from his circumstances. After his defeat at Culloden, he bore his misfortunes, and passed through dangers, with such equanimity as still to appear respectable and great. Since the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle, when he was obliged to depart out of France, he has had little opportunity of showing to the world what he really was. He married the Princess Louisa Maximiliana de Stolberg Guederan, on the 17th April 1772, but they have had no issue: so that the male line of the Royal Family of Stuart is now reduced to the Cardinal alone, after it had given Kings to Scotland for three or four hundred years, and by the Princesses of it, Sovereigns to almost all Europe."

Mr. Dickson is of opinion, that in place of Ecclesiastes, xlvii. chap. and 17th verse, it should have been Ecclesiasticus xlvii. and 17th, "Thy name went abroad to the islands far off, and thou wast beloved in thy peace;" Job xxix. and 5th, "When the Almighty was with me, and my servants round about me?" Tobias ii. and 18th, "For we are the children of saints, and look for that life which God will give to those that never change their faith from him." Mr. Dickson differs again from the old Almanack. He thinks that it should have been Proverbs xxv. and 27th, "As it is not good for a man to eat much honey, so he that is searcher of majesty shall be overwhelmed by glory;" 2 Maccab. vi. and 31st. "Thus did this man die, leaving not only to young men, but also to the whole nation, the memory of his death for an example of virtue and of fortitude."

SCOTTISH EPISCOPAL CHURCH SOCIETY.

IN OUR NOTICE of this interesting Society, we were obliged to postpone the following extracts from the speeches; but which will be read with interest.

The Rev. Mr. Langhorne, in seconding one of the Resolutions, said:

But for the information of our friends both at home and abroad, will you permit me to dissect this 80%. a year, to take its measurement in detail, in order to see how far it will go towards the support of a clergyman, or any man occupying the status of a clergman

I shall give you the result at which I have arrived, after the most strict regard to a searching and rigid economy. I need not inform the meeting, that generally speaking, the Scottish episcopal clergy have no parsonage-house, no roof to cover them, except what they provide for themselves out of this said 80%. Now I find, after a calculation upon the most moderate scale, that between house-rent, a servant's wages and maintenance, fuel, candles, clothing, medical attendance, charity, and a few books, with sundry little et ceteras, almost too minute to particularize, but still amounting to something in the aggregate, your clergyman has remaining for his support, strictly so to speak,-let it not create a smile,-just 287. a year; and if you divide this by 365, you will find that it is at the rate of 1s. 7d. per day! which is scarcely one-half of what our labouring population are at this moment earning with their picks and shovels! . I have considered a clergyman as an individual. You have no doubt also heard of such a word as incumbrances. pretty well understood on both sides of the Tweed. information of those who may never have seriously taken up this view of the matter, I may mention. . that incumbrances mean a wife and half a dozen children, more or less; and it so happens that most of your clergy, though incumbents, are not without these socalled incumbrances. How then are we to exist on 19d. a day, under these circumstances? . . . And it must be remembered that this daily allowance will fall almost to zero, when you reflect that both our clothing establishment and our medical board, must be doubled or tripled with this drawback of incumbrances. Upon the strength of this aspect of our affairs, and under the most sincere conviction of its accuracy, I confidently appeal to this meeting, and through this meeting to the Church at large, and through the Church at large to our friends at large,-I invite them to co-operate with us in our future efforts to render the Society productive of still greater advantages, I invite them as they value their own privileges to cast, though it be but their mite, into our treasury. They do not require to be told from this place, who it is that said with such awful emphasis," Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye did it unto me."

We cannot omit a paragraph from the Rev. Mr. Alexander's speech, which in effect applies with equal force to England.

To speak of our educational efforts in past days in the most favourable terms consistent with truth, we cannot deny that we have done very little in this way, as compared with what we ought to have done -a circumstance, the truth of which is painfully attested by the fact, that we have been left, as a Church, very much without the poor, who have gone elsewhere to find for their children, as well as for themselves, that sympathy and care which ought ever to be awarded to so peculiarly interesting a part of the heritage of Christ. Now, we may depend upon it, that if we fail to educate the children of the poor, others will be too ready and anxious to relieve us of the charge; for we cannot shut our eyes to the circumstance, that the Romanists on the one hand, and many of the presbyterians on the other, are alike bent on the overthrow of our national and Catholic episcopate, as well as of our pure and primitive faith; no opportunity being lost by either of these two parties to destroy any hold which the Church may possess on the affections of any part of the people. . . At this very moment there is much cause to dread that various congregations in the rural districts of Scotland may become entirely extinct at no distant day, from lack of necessary instruction to the children of the poor, and we know that in towns, our houses of prayer are too often almost exclusively occupied by the noble and the wealthy.

FASTS AND FESTIVALS IN APRIL.

GOOD FRIDAY has succeeded to the Day of Expiation in the Jewish Church. At the paschal supper, our Lord offered Himself, under the form or figure of bread and wine, a voluntary sacrifice in atonement for the sins of the whole world; and on the following day, which we now call GOOD FRIDAY, He suffered death on the Cross. He was both the priest and the victim-the very paschal lamb, devoted to death from the beginning of the world; and by this sacrifice of Himself He fulfilled all the bloody sacrifices which were types of His expiation. At the very moment that our Lord was atoning for the sins of the whole world on the Cross, the high-priest was celebrating its representation in the Temple. And as he was going to enter the holy place with the blood of the typical sacrifice, the veil which hid it from the people was rent from the top to the bottom, in token that its appointed service was "finished," and Christ our Passover was about to carry His own redeeming blood into heaven, the real holy of holies, after having purged all men from works deserving death. Let us, therefore, crucify the old Adam within us, that we may not crucify Christ afresh by our daily sins; for every unrepented sin is a thorn, a nail, and a spear; and all of us who have thus pierced Him shall look upon Him, and every eye shall see Him.

EASTER EVEN. As, by the eye of faith we behold Christ hanging on the Cross, let us take Him down and bury Him in the tomb of a new heart, and then embalm Him in the sweet odours of faith, prayer, and good works. The soul of Christ went from His body to Hades, the mansion where the souls of the righteous are in safe keeping till the day of judgment. It is called in Scripture, Paradise-Abraham's bosom-the Prison-under the altar. There He preached to the imprisoned souls that their faith had been consummated, and that those who had "seen His day" by faith, might now rejoice in the faithful hope of a joyful resurrection1.

EASTER DAY is the annual commemoration of our Lord's resurrection; and its observation is as ancient as the Resurrection itself. The Jews' Passover was typical; but our Easter is congratulatory of Christ's resurrection, the belief of which is a fundamental article of the Christian faith. There was never any dispute in the Church about keeping this festival; but there was a very violent controversy about the proper time for keeping it. The Council

of Nice determined that Easter Day shall be the Sunday next after the full-moon that happens on or shortly after the 21st of March; and a cycle of nineteen years was established for computing the day. By His rising from the dead, Christ opened to us the gate of everlasting life, and purchased our justification.

ST. MARK'S DAY is celebrated on the 25th of April, for the service which he did, and the legacy that he left to the Church in his gospel. He was the nephew of Barnabas, and was the son of Mary, in whose house it is said our Lord ate his last Paschal Supper. He wa Bishop of Alexandria, where it is supposed he died a natural death, and was buried.

But I never said nor thought that the Protestants made this rent [in the Church Catholic]. The cause of this schism is yours, [the Roman Church]; for you thrust us from you, because we called for truth and a redress of abuses. For a schism must needs be theirs, whose the cause of it is. The woe runs full out of the mouth of Christ, ever against him that gives the offence, not against him that takes it ever.-Laud v. Fisher.

If corruption in manners were a just cause of actual separation of one Church from another in that Catholic body of Christ, the Church of Rome hath given as great cause as any; since (as Stapleton [a Jesuit, grants), there is scarce any sin that can be thought by man, with which that see [of Rome] hath not been foully stained. -Laud v. FROM THAT FATAL moment in which Adam forfeited the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, His grace was not ordinarily given, even to the best of the Old Testament Saints, until it was purchased back by our blessed Lord, and given to His Church at His ascension, as one of His "gifts unto men." The gift of the Holy Ghost is bestowed in the Christian sacraments, and was not a privilege of the Jewish Church; for, says the apostle, "received ye the Spirit by the works of the law" under the former dispensation; or was it not "by the hearing of faith?" that is, the belief of the Gospel. Here the apostle puts the hearing of faith, which means an honest and sincere obedience, instead of the whole of the Christian duties and privileges. The gift of the Holy Ghost at our regeneration in baptism is the inward spiritual grace; and He works in us that spiritual change, by which we are translated out of our natural state as descendants of Adam and partakers of his sin, into a spiritual state in Christ, to be partakers of the divine nature. By this change we are saved, or placed in a state of Salvation; for "he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved." "It is evident," says Bishop Bethel," that to be born again, or born of water and of the Spirit, signifies the same thing as to be saved by the washing of regeneration, so there can be no reasonable doubt that to be saved by the washing of regeneration is equivalent to being saved by baptism, and, consequently, that to be saved by baptism and to be born again, * Continued from page 263.
