AFRICA. Verne, J. The adventures of three Eng-
lishmen and three Russians in South Africa
Five weeks in a balloon; or, journeys and dis-
coveries in Africa by three Englishmen. 53.32; 1743.15
Note.-The above books are exaggerations of modern travels
in Africa. Mayne Reid's Young yagers" [710.25], “ Bush-
boys" [710.5], and other of his juveniles are somewhat
strongly drawn pictures of life in South Africa. Du Chaillu's
juveniles, The country of the dwarfs " [657.23]," Lost in the
Jungle" [1699.12],"My Apingi kingdom" (1690.13], Stories
of the gorilla country" (1699.8], and Wild life under the
equator" [1699 6]. are of a similar character. Ballantyne's
"Gorilla hunters" [746.21; 757.2] and "Black ivory [1745.15],
for slavers on the East coast, and his "Pirate city" [1778.9].
for Algerire life in the north, are popular narratives for the
young. Stanley, the discovere: of Livingstone, has given the
form of fiction to some of his experiences in "My Kalulu"
[187.6]. The gold coast is depicted in Skertchly's Melinda
the caboceer" [53.28; 1465.9]. The diamond fields of South
Africa are the scene of part of Charles Reade's "Simpleton "
[53.8; 1743.15; 1766.2]. Dumas's "Tales of Algeria" [785.4]
concern the north coast, as does Mayo's "Berber "[1783.3].

See also Mayo's Kaloolah" [1773.17] and Walmsley's
"Ruined cities of Zulu land" [508.13].

Two well-known and classic tales in English and French
literature have dwelt on life in Africa. The interest of Dr.
Johnson's Rasselas" [499.15; 759.10; 901.6.1, etc.] is more in
its sonorous style and lofty moral tone than in its delineations
of life in Abyssinia. The pathetic story of St. Pierre's" Paul
and Virginia [729.1; 1782.14] is associated with the neigh-
boring island of Mauritius.

See under Egypt for other illustrative fiction, and the note
on page 9 of the Catalogue of history, etc., for historical rela-

tions.

Note.-Ainsworth's novels almost entirely illustrate English
history, and in the best of them his guidance is acceptable for
the average reader. He has been much censured for what is
called the robber and gallows spirit in some of them. Some-
thing of his standing as an author can be learned from Fris-
well's Modern men of letters" [2578 50], and from Maclise
and Maginn's "Portrait gallery "[2240a.52].

ANNE BOLEYN, queen of Henry VIII, of England.

Note. She is the subject of tragedies by II. H. Milman [327.9.3] and George II. Boker [5.2.1]. Landor gives a delineation of her character in one of his “Imaginary conversations" [2565.24] between her and Henry VIII. The latest considerable life of her is by Dixon [1538 8; 2444.53]; but Miss Strickland's [592.1.2] is of importance still. Froude's estimate will be found in his "History of England" [984 2.2; 2436.5 23. See also Miss Benger's life [554.1; 594.15); and lesser accounts by Mrs. Jameson (569.28], and Lodge, in his "Portraits" [815.1.1].

His Improvisatore" [766.9; 792 2] is a vivid delineation of life under the mild skies of Italy as the pilgrim from the north found it with all its contrasts to the life of Denmark.

ART and artlessness. Baker, H. N. (W.)
ART novels, etc.

A style of fiction illustrative of art-life and of the effects of esthetic ideas on daily existence is chiefly of late growth, and has been most largely produced in Germany.

Greenough's Apelles and his contemporaries" [487.11] covers a radiant period of Greek art.

Italian art in Oehlenschläger's drama of "Correggio" [1574]; in Meurice's "Benvenuto Cellini " [4671.2.1]; in Heinse's "Aidinghello" [4048.3.1]; in Grosse's Caravaggio" (2877.58 2]; in various dramatic sketches by Barry Cornwall 4.22] about Michael Angelo and Raphael; in Jameson's Diary of an ennuyée" (469.50]; in Allston's **Monaidi " [755.1; 4407.56); in Greenough's Ernest Carroll" [497.9]; in Hawthorne's Marble faun" [50),10], ete. Albert Dürer is the central figure in many of the German representations, the best known of which is perhaps Schefer's "Künstlerche" [1018.2.1: 4:58.8.1], known in English as The artist's married life" [416,16]. Tieck's "Sternbald's travels" pertains to a pupil of Dürer.

Of the Low country art stories the best known to English readers is perhaps Sternberg's "Gebrüder Breughel," translated as "The Breughel brothers [17211; 2805.5].

There are some pictures of English artist life for the last century in Brachvogel's "Hogarth" (2879.60], and for recent days in Wilkie Collins's Hide and seex " (7203; 754 1]; in Mrs. Annie Edwards's "Archie Lovell" [771.2]; and in Thackeray's" Newcomes" [450.58; 501.2].
