with other offices, divisions, and sections in expediting the issuance of economic designs and specifications to meet program requirements and other commitments. He exercises on behalf of the Chief Engineer technical supervision of all field design activities, reviews designs and specifications produced by field offices, and recommends action by the Chief Engineer. Through his staff he provides for technical inspection of Bureau structures and facilities and issues instructions for efficient operation and maintenance.

A. The Dams Division prepares preliminary and final designs, quantitative materials estimates, and drafts of specifications for concrete and earth dams and appurtenant or related works including spillways, outlet works, river diversions and controls, relocation of highways and railroads, migratory fish control works, and related features; exercises technical control and review of similar work performed in the regions; exercises technical control over artificial cooling of concrete; analyzes involved engineering and hydraulic problems requiring the application of mathematical and theoretical procedures; and periodically inspects work execution and structure performance.

B. The Canals Division prepares preliminary and final designs, quantitative materials estimates, and drafts of specifications for diversion works, canals, distribution and drainage systems, irrigation structures, and major bridges; exercises technical control and review of similar work performed in the regions; analyzes data on performance of completed works; and periodically inspects work execution and structure performance.

C. The Electrical Division prepares preliminary and final designs, quantitative
materials estimates, and drafts of specifications for electrical features of
power and pumping systems, transmission lines, substations, buildings,
and public utilities; exercises technical control and review of similar work
performed in the regions; provides technical assistance on planning, opera-
tion, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment; exercises technical
control over field installation; and periodically inspects work execution and
structure performance.

D. The Mechanical Division prepares preliminary and final designs, quantitative materials estimates, and drafts of specifications for gates, valves, hoists, elevators, steel penstocks, tanks, and other mechanical features for dams, power and pumping plants, and irrigation works; exercises technical control and review of similar work performed in the regions; makes factory inspections of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic equipment; exercises technical control of field installation of mechanical equipment; provides technical assistance on planning, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment; and periodically inspects work execution and structure performance.

E. The Structural and Architectural Division prepares preliminary and final
designs, quantitative materials estimates, and drafts of specifications for
structural and architectural features of buildings, camps, power plants,
pumping plants, switchyard and substation structures, tourist facilities at
dams, camp layout, landscaping, and street, sewer, and water sytems;
exercises technical control and review of similar work performed in the
regions; makes studies of the architectural treatment of dams; and period-
ically inspects work execution and structure performance.

F. The Hydraulic Machinery Division prepares preliminary and final designs,
quantitative materials estimates, and drafts specifications for hydraulic
and associated mechanical features of power and pumping plants; exercises
technical control and review of similar work performed in the regions;
approves manufacturers' drawings and conducts acceptance tests; and
periodically inspects work execution and structure performance.
