We have here today the Food and Drug Administration. We have Dr. Frank Young, Commissioner of Food and Drugs; Mr. Wilford J. Forbush, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health Operations, and their associates. For anyone new to the Committee, we would be glad to have a biographical sketch included in the record. We will be glad to have you proceed as you like. Dr. YOUNG. Thank you very much, Mr. Chairman. Mr. WHITTEN. Dr. Young, if you want somebody else to tell how good you are, you could turn to Mr. Forbush. Dr. YOUNG. I would be happy to turn it over to Mr. Forbush. I would like to make just a couple of remarks. In the PHS' overall public health efforts, FDA plays a very critical role. For example, the agency helps assure a safe and nutritious food supply, assures that vaccines and other drugs used in disease prevention are safe, effective, and properly labeled, approves animal drugs and feeds, and approves medical devices which are used for diagnosing and treating disease. This past year, FDA has made some very significant accomplishments in health promotion and disease prevention. In the Orphan Products area, for example, FDA approved a human growth hormone developed from recombinant DNA technology.
