And immediately, while he yet fpake, cometh: Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great. multitude with fwords and ftaves, from the chief 44 priefts, and the fcribes, and the elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, faying, Whomfoever I fhall kifs, that fame is he; take 45 him, and lead him away fafely. And as foon as he was come, he goeth ftraightway to him, and faith, Mafter, Master; and kissed him.

46 And they laid their hands on him, and took him. 47 And one of them that ftood by, drew a sword, and fmote a fervant of the high-prieft, and cut off his 48 ear. And Jefus anfwered and faid unto them, Are

ye come out as against a thief with fwords and with 49 ftaves, to take me? I was daily with you in the

temple, teaching, and ye took me not: but the 50 fcriptures must be fulfilled. And they all forfook 51 him, and fled. And there followed him a certain

young man, having a linen cloth caft about his 52 body; and the young men laid hold on him. And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them (n) naked..

53 And they led Jefus away to the high-prieft: and with him were affembled all the chief priests, and 54 the elders, and the fcribes. And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high-priest: and he fat with the fervants, and warmed himself 55 at the fire. And the chief priefts, and all the council, fought for witness against Jefus to put him to 56 death; and found 'none. For many bare falfe wit

(2) This circumftance feems to have been recorded, to flew the confternation of our Lord's difciples; the young man choosing to quit his only covering, in cold weather, rather than be detained by thofe officers..

And there arose certain, and bare false wit 58 nefs against him, saying, We heard him fay, I will deftroy this temple that is made with (p) hands, and. within three days I will build another made without 59 hands. But neither fo did their witness agree toge60 ther. And the high-prieft ftood up in the midft,

and afked Jefus, faying, Anfwereft thou nothing? 、 61 what is it which thefe witness against thee? But. he held his peace, and anfwered nothing. Again the high-priest asked him, and faid unto him, Art 62 thou the Chrift, the Son of the Bleffed? And Jefus. faid, I am and ye fhall fee the (9) Son of man fitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the 63 clouds of heaven. Then the high-priest rent his

clothes, and faith, What need we any further wit64 nefes? Ye have heard the blafphemy: what think

ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of 65 death. And fome began to fpit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to fay unto. him, Prophefy: and the fervants did ftrike him with the palms of their hands.

66 And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there

cometh one of the (r) maids of the high-prieft. 67 And when fhe faw Peter warming himfelf, fhe

looked upon him, and faid, And thou also wast with 68 Jefus of Nazareth But he denied, faying, I know

not, neither understand I what thou fayeft. And 69 he went out into the porch; and the cock crew. And

a maid faw him again, and began to fay to them 70 that ftood by, This is one of them (s). And he denied it again. And a little after, they that ftood by

ND ftraightway in the morning the chief priests held a confultation with the elders and fcribes, and the whole council, and bound Jefus, and car2 ried him away, and delivered him to Pilate. And Pilate afked him, Art thou the king of the Jews? And he answering faid unto him, Thou (a) fayeft it. And the chief priests accufed him of many things: but he anfvered nothing. And Pilate afked him again, faying, Anfwereft thou nothing? behold 5 how many things they witness against thee. But Jefus yet answered nothing; fo that Pilate marvel

6 Now at that feaft he released unto them one 7 prifoner, whomfoever they defired (b). And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made infurrection with him, who had 8 committed murder in the infurrection.. And the multitude crying aloud, began to defire him to do 9 as he had ever done unto them. But Pilate answered

them, faying, Will ye that I release unto you 10 the king of the Jews? (For he knew that the 11 chief priests had delivered him for envy.) But the

chief priests moved the people, that he should 12 rather releafe Barabbas unto them. And. Pilate

answered,

anfwered, and faid again unto them, 'What will ye then that I fhall do unto him whom ye call the king 13 of the Jews? and they cried out again, Crucify 14 him. Then Pilate faid unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more > exceedingly, Crucify him.

15 And fo Pilate willing to content the people, releafed Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jefus, 16 when he had fcourged him, to be crucified.

the foldiers led him away into the hall called Pretorium; and they call together the whole band. 17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted 18 a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, And

began to falute him, Hail, (c) king of the Jews. 19 And they fmote him on the head with a reed, and

did fpit upon him, and bowing their knees worfhip20 ped him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him. 21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who paf

fed by, coming out of the country, the (d) father of 22 Alexander and Rufus, to bear his crofs. And they

bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being 23 interpreted, the place of a skull. And they gave him to drink, wine mingled with myrrh (e): but 24 he received it not. And when they had crucified

him, they parted his garments (f), cafting lots upon 25 them, what every man fhould take. And it was

the fixth hour was come, there was darkness over 34 the whole (i) land, until the ninth hour. And at the (k) ninth hour Jefus cried with a loud voice, faying, Eloi, Eloi, lama fabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast 35 thou forfaken me (7) ? And fome of them that flood by, when they heard it, faid, Behold, he calleth

(g) As the night was diftinguifhed by four watches, the twelve hours of the day were alfo marked by four principal ones, viz., the first, third, fixth, and ninth, as in the parable of the labourers. Matt. xx. fo that whatever happened between the third and fixth, that is, from nine o'clock to noon, was reckoned to belong to the third hour, however near the conclufion of it. This was the cafe of the crucifixion, near the end of the third hour, and approaching to the fixth, as described by St. John xix. 14. about the fixth hour, or very near noon.

(1) Thefe words are the beginning of Pfalm xxii. which our Saviour repeats not as defponding under his fufferings, but most probably to direct the people's attention to him as the Meffiah, whofe deliverance and exaltation, as well as his humiliation and death, are described in that pfalm.
