FISCAL YEAR 1989 BUDGET IN BRIEF

TO THE

SUBCOMMITTEE ON LEGISLATIVE BRANCH APPROPRIATIONS

The funds requested represent the best estimate of the Technology Assessment Board of what is required to meet the needs of the 100th Congress.

For salaries and expenses necessary to carry out the provisions of the Technology Assessment Act of 1972 (P.L. 92-484), including reception and representation expenses (not to exceed [$3,000] $3,500 from the Trust Fund), and those expenditures authorized by P.L 92-484, Sec. 6(a)(5), to be made from the Trust Fund, and rental of space in the District of Columbia, and those necessary to carry out the duties of the Director of the Office of Technology Assessment under [Section 1886 of the Social Security Act as amended by Section 601 of the Social Security Amendments of 1983 (P.L. 98-21)] 42 U.S.c. 1395ww, and those necessary to carry out the duties of the Director of the Office of Technology Assessment under [Part B of title XVIII of the Social Security Act as amended by Section 9305 of the Consolidated Omnibus Reconciliation Bill of 1985 (P.L. 99-272)] 42 U.S.C. 1395w-1: [$16,901,000] $18,321,000: Provided, that none of the funds in the Act shall be available for salaries or expenses of any employee of the Office of Technology Assessment in excess of 143 staff employees: Provided further, that no part of this appropriation shall be available for assessments or activities not initiated and approved in accordance with section 3(d) of Public Law 92-484, except that funds shall be available for the assessment required by Public Law 96-151: Provided further, that none of the funds in this Act shall be available for salaries or expenses of employees of the Office of Technology Assessment in connection with any reimbursable study for which funds are provided from sources other than appropriations made under this Act, or be available for any other administrative expenses incurred by the Office of Technology Assessment in carrying out such a studyl, except that funds shall be available for and reimbursement can be accepted for salaries or expenses of the Office of Technology Assessment in connection with the assessment required
