I do not find the present unsatisfactory; I merely take it for granted. It is interwoven
in the pattern and what interests me is what remains to come. I have made a
great many mistakes. I have at times fallen victim to a snare to which the writer is
... and wanting to show his gratitude (which of course he had no business to feel,
for my apparent kindness was rigidly determined) he asked me what I would like
as a present, I answered without hesitation Herbert Spencer's First Principles.
I was much more ignorant than are, it seems to me, young men of that age at the
present day. I •cttled down in Seville. I grew a moustache, smoked Filipino cigars,
learnt the guitar, bought a broad-brimmed hat with  THE SUMMING UP.
