THE MOST FAMOUS CORRESPONDENCE OF THE XVIII

CENTURY

THE ORIGINAL LETTERS OF DR. JOHNSON TO

MRS. THRALE

JOHNSON, DR. SAMUEL. A Most Important and Extremely Interesting collection of TWENTY-EIGHT AUTOGRAPH LETTERS, SIGNED BY DR. JOHNSON, and addressed to Mrs. Thrale (with the exception of one to Miss Boothy, and another to Miss Cottrell). They vary in length from 1 p., 8vo, to 7 pp., 4to, and were written during the years from 1755 to 1783.

$2500.00

The contents of the letters refer to Johnson's journey to the Hebrides, and the personal affairs of Mr. and Mrs. Thrale, Mr. Thrale's death, and also Johnson's own ill health. Mrs. Thrale is perhaps better known as Mrs. Piozzi. MANY of these letters, apparently, HAVE NEVER BEEN PUBLISHED. A remarkable series of letters forming one of the finest Johnson items ever offered for sale.

JOHNSON, SAMUEL (DOCTOR). A. L. S. 1 p., 4to, April 8th, 1775, to Dr. Edward Bentham, Canon of Christ Church and Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford; acknowledging the "benevolent eloquence" in which the Canon had borne testimony in favor of his writings.

Dr. Johnson's Taxation no Tyranny appeared in March, 1775. $95.00

A very interesting UNPUBLISHED LETTER.

JOHNSON, SAMUEL (DOCTOR). A. L. S. 2 pp., 4to, n. p., Apr. 16th, 1763 (received by the Rev. Dr. Strahan while a student at college).

An interesting dissertation on the study of Latin.

$90.00

"You are angry that a theme on which you took so much pains was at last a kind of English Latin. What could you expect more? If at the end of seven years you write good Latin, you will excel most of your contemporaries.

(Signed) SAM. JOHNSON."
