The First Edition. It is an admirable monument of English prose writing. On p. 11 William Shakespeare is mentioned and quoted with tacit praise. On p. 12, he speaks of the vaine amatorious Poem of Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadia. Elsewhere he expresses his loathing for the "bloody Bishops' and the Common Prayerbook.

This copy is quite complete, with the dedication to the Winter Night's Vision, address to the Earl of Nottingham, of which Lowndes says that it is in Malone's copy in the Bodleian Library, but having been suppressed is seldom found in the volume. This is the only complete edition of this most popular work, all previous ones having contained only portions. Several leaves have been remargined at the top, otherwise a good copy.
