THE EXECUTIVE MANSION was commenced in 1792, and was first occupied in 1800
by John Adams. The architect, Hoban, took his design from the house of the Duke
of Leinster in Dublin, and its cost up to date, inclusive of alterations, additions,
etc., exceeds $1,500,000. In spite of its size, 170 x 86 feet, it contains only seven
sleeping rooms, the rest being devoted to State and business purposes,
