REVIEWS.

"A volume, at once handsome, useful, and interesting, has just been issued under the above title; and as the information contained in it has been contributed by gentlemen personally and intimately connected with the branches of industry treated of, it will be apparent that the book will form a valuable text-book far beyond the district to which it particularly relates. The work is beautifully illustrated with about thirty plates, comprising engravings executed in the best possible manner, and chromo-lithographic maps, plans, and sections, produced in that admirable style for which Newcastle-onTyne has so long been celebrated. The volume is of especial value to all interested in the locality, and is well worthy of perusal by commercial men generally, from the enormous amount of interesting matter it contains, and it is one which will at the same time be an ornament to any library in which it may find a place."—Mining Journal

"The meeting at Newcastle will long be remembered as one of the most successful gatherings of the British Association; and it will not be forgotten how great an interest was given to the proceedings by the valuable papers on the local industries now collected in this volume, and here illustrated by maps, plans, and engravings, with a profuseness we have never seen equalled. The illustrative maps and engravings sctrered so profusely through the pages of this volume give it a lasting and peculiar interest which the mere papers, valuable as they were, could not possess. Appendices have been added to the papers, which give manufacturing details it

would have been impossible to supply in their original form. Besides this, these additions to all the reports w be found to contain much original matter, pub ished fr the first time, and sometimes drawn from out-of-the-way sources. Some curious information will also be found i the reports on the manu acture of paper and of ga But the more solid information is not wanting, and st heartily recommend the book to our readers, at the sat time thanking the authors and the Newcastle publish for the richness and excellence of the illustrations, which must have been produced at a very considerable cost.”— Chemical News.

"Should any one wish to make himself acquainted with the development of a great fact, and how, from sa beginnings, the three districts comprised under t somewhat comprebensive terms of Tyne, Wear, and Tea are likely to revolutionise the iron trade of Great Britain and how, in the last thirty years, they have coutributed so fully and so well to all the great mechanical, chemic and manufacturing improvements of the age in which w live, let him read a volume just issued from Newcastle upon-Tyne, upon the resources of these three rivers The whole work is most credit bly got up by the publisher; it is illustrated with twenty-eight wellfinished lithographs or engravings; and the matters referred to being both numerons and diffuse, are, in the main, able examples of north-country compilation and book-making, which, both in their artistic details, a well as in general accuracy, are most creditable to the talent of the district."-Mechanics' Magazine.

ARTEMUS WARD, HIS TRAVELS AMONG the MORMONS. Copyright cheap Edit., 1s. ARTEMUS WARD, HIS BOOK. Hotten's Edition (which is the Author's Edition), containing one-third more matter than any other, should be asked for. 1s.

Mr. Hotten was the first to introduce these books in this country. He has spent money in advertising and making them known, besides distributing gratis several hundred copies to the press. Having sown his seed, he now finds that some active members of the trade have a great desire to assist in the harvest operations. Most Englishmen, however, will scarcely regard this as fair. That there may be no mistake about Mr. Hotten's ORIGINAL EDITION of "A. Ward," he has affixed a white label across the cover, "without which none are genuine." It is humiliating to descend to such an arrangement as a means to protect one's rights, but it is hoped that this label, at least, may not be copied.
