in Lowliness of Mind let each efteem other better than themselves.

a Honour all Men. If ye falute your Brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the Publicans fo?

b Ye younger, fubmit your felves unto the elder; yea, all of you, be fubject one to another, and be cloathed with Humility.

Rebuke not an Elder, but intreat him as a Father, and the younger Men as Brethren; the elder Women as Mothers, the younger as Sifters.

d Thou shalt rife up before the hoary Head, and honour the Face of the old Man.

e Let not the Child behave himself proudly against the ancient, nor the base against the honourable.

f Honour Widows that are Widows indeed. He that despiseth his Neighbour finneth.

h Let us not accept any Man's Perfon, neither let us give flattering Titles unto Man; Having Mens Perfons in Admiration, because of Advantage.

i Let no Man glory in Men, nor be puffed up for one against another.

They that forfake the Law, praise the wicked; but fuch as keep the Law, contend with them: In whofe Eyes a vile Perfon is contemned: But they honour them that fear the Lord.

PEACE and UNION.

Be at Peace among your felves; and follow after the things which make for Peace: Shewing all Meekness unto all Men.

b Study to be quiet, and to do your own Bufinefs; and if it be poffible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all Men.

Seek the Peace of the City, and the Welfare of the People whereunto ye belong; for in the Peace thereof ye fhall have Peace.

d One is your Mafter, even Chrift, and all ye are Brethren: therefore have Peace one with another.

e Be ye all of one Mind; endeavouring to keep the Unity of the Spirit in the Bond of Peace. For there is one Lord, one Faith, one Baptifm, one God and Father of all; and ye are one Body in Chrift, and every one Members one of another. There is neither Jew, nor Greek; there is neither bond, nor free; there is neither Male, nor Female; for ye are all one in Christ Jefus.

f If there be, therefore, any Confolation in Chrift, if any Comfort of Love, if any Fellowfhip of the Spirit, if any Bowels and Mercies, be ye like-minded, having the fame Love, being of one Accord, of one Mind, of one Heart, and of one Soul.

a I bea

a I beseech you, Brethren, by the Name of our Lord Jefus Chrift, that ye all speak the fame thing, and that there be no Divifions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the fame Mind, and in the fame Judg

ment.

b The God of Patience and Confolation grant you to be like-minded one towards another according to Chrift Jefus; that ye may with one Mind and one Mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jefus Christ.

• Let us walk by the fame Rule, let us mind the fame thing.

d Let us ftand faft in one Spirit, with one Mind, ftriving together for the Faith of the Gospel.

e Let all Bitternefs, and Wrath, and Anger, and Clamour, and evil Speaking be put away from you, with all Malice.

f Wrath is cruel, and Anger is outragious, but who is able to stand before Envy.

g Let us not be defirous of Vain-glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

h Foolish and unlearned Questions avoid, knowing that they do gender Strifes. And the Servant of the Lord must not frive, but be gentle unto all Men.

i Strive not with a Man without Caufe, if he have done thee no harm.

[blocks in formation]

a Go not forth hastily to ftrive, left thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy Neighbour hath put thee to Shame.

b Debate thy Caufe with thy Neighbour himfelf, and difcover not a Secret to another; left he that heareth it put thee to Shame, and thine Infamy turn not away.

The beginning of Strife is, as when one letteth out Water; therefore leave off Contention, before it be meddled with.

d As Coals are to burning Coals, and Wood to Fire, fo is a contentious Man to kindle Strife. e Thou shalt not go up and down as Talebearer among thy People.

f Where no Wood is, there the Fire goeth out, fo where there is no Tale-bearer, the Strife ceafeth. For a Tale-bearer revealeth Secrets, and a Whisperer feparateth Friends; but he that is of a faithful Spirit, concealeth the matter.

Only by Pride cometh Contention; but with the well advised is Wisdom.

h Caft out the Scorner, and Contention shall go out; yea, Strife and Reproach fhall ceafe. For fcornful Men bring a City into a Snare; but wife Men turn away Wrath.

i From whence come Wars and Fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your Lufts that war in your Members. ?

k He loveth Tranfgreffion that loveth Strife.

It is an Honour for a Man to ceafe from Strife; but every Fool will be meddling.

a The Lot causeth Contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.

b Whereas there is among you Envying, and Strife, and Divifions, are ye not carnal, and walk as Men? For while one faith, I am of Paul, and another, I am of Apollos, and I of Cephas, and I of Chrift; are ye not carnal? is Chrift divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the Name of Paul? who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but Minifters, by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every Man?

c If ye have bitter Envying and Strife in your Hearts, glory not: For this Wisdom defcendeth not from above, but is earthly, fenfual, devilish: But the Wisdom that is from above is peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated.

d There must be Herefies and Divifions among you; that they which are approved, may be made manifeft: But woe unto them, through whom these Offences come.

e He that will love Life, and fee good Days, let him feek Peace, and enfue it.

f Behold how good and how pleasant it is for Brethren to dwell together in Unity!

g Can two walk together except they be agreed?

h Every Kingdom divided against it felf is brought to Defolation: And every City or House divided against it self shall not stand.
