BOAT BUILDING AND BOAT REPAIRING [A preliminary report for this industry was issued December 13, 1940] Description of the industry. This industry embraces establishments primarily engaged in building or repairing boats of less than 5 gross tons of all types, such as inboard and outboard motorboats, sailboats, rowboats, lifeboats, canoes, etc. The value of products of this industry is the value of work done during the year by these establishments. Prior to the Census of Manufactures for 1939, ship and boat building and repairing were included in a single industry, "Ship and boat building and repairing." For 1939 this industry was divided into (a) the "Shipbuilding and ship repairing" industry, covering establishments primarily engaged in building and repairing ships of 5 gross tons and over, and (b) the "Boat building and boat repairing" industry, covering establishments primarily engaged in building and repairing boats of less than 5 gross tons. The 1937 figures shown in the following tables were compiled from a special tabulation of the 1937 returns and are comparable with the 1939 statis BOAT BUILDING AND BOAT REPAIRING TABLE 2.-GENERAL STATISTICS IN DETAIL BY STATES: 1939-Continued ITEM 549 3 See GENERAL EXPLANATIONS-Wage earners and wages. 2 See GENERAL EXPLANATIONS-Persons engaged-general classification. Similar information was called for on out board motorboats but is withheld to avoid disclosing data reported by individual establishments; practically all outboards were reported as being for pleasure use, the number for other uses being negligible. For 1939, rowboats, lifeboats, and canoes were not segregated as to use: of the 1,764 "Other boats including those not reported as to kind" shown for 1939, there were 1,622 reported as for pleasure use and 142 for other uses. TABLE 5.-WAGE EARNERS ENGAGED IN MANUFACTURING, BY MONTHS, FOR THE UNITED STATES, 1939 AND 1937, AND BY STATES, 1939 MOTORCYCLES, BICYCLES, AND PARTS [A preliminary report for this industry was issued September 19, 1940] Description of the industry. This industry embraces establishments primarily engaged in the manufacture of complete motorcycles, side cars, motor scooters, bicycles, and motorcycle and bicycle parts, such as saddles, seat posts, frames, handlebars, etc. Establishments primarily engaged in the manufacture of engines, tires, lamps, and electrical supplies are classified in other industries. An analysis of the summary statistics for this industry indicates that the increases in wage earners, wages, and value of products for 1939 are primarily due to classification in the "Motorcycles, bicycles, and parts" industry for 1939 of certain establishments which were classified in other industries in 1937. The value of the bicycles made by these establishments in 1937 accounted for a large part of the 1937 "Secondary products of other industries," as shown in table 3. 1909 4,437 10,886 12,763, 235 1904 101 312 3, 319 17, 525 1, 971, 403 1899. 11, 281, 327 23,894, 805 25, 985, 915 53, 105, 895 1 See GENERAL EXPLANATIONS-Definition of establishment. 12, 613, 478 11, 280, 057 12,080, 988] 14, 256, 298 12,774, 938 27, 119, 980 11, 306, 608 5, 615, 998 2,315 2,355 2,365 3.251 (5) 4, 137 2,979 5, 004 The total value of products for the industry includes duplication to the extent to which the products of establishments engaged in the manufacture of parts and accessories are used by other establishments in the industry in manufacturing complete assemblies.
