REFRIGERATORS, DOMESTIC (MECHANICAL AND ABSORPTION), REFRIGERATION MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT, AND COMPLETE AIR-CONDITIONING UNITS

[A preliminary report for this industry was issued December 27, 1940]

Description of the industry.-This industry, as defined for census purposes, embraces establishments whose principal products are mechanical refrigerators (both the motor-driven or compression type and the absorption or heat-actuated type) and refrigerating systems (both domestic and commercial), cabinets for sale as such (whether for use with mechanical refrigerating systems or for use with ice), and industrial ice-making and refrigerating machines. This classification does not cover the construction, by builders, of built-in cooling rooms, cabinets, etc.

Complete mechanical refrigerators. It is impossible to calculate, from the census records, the total number of complete mechanical refrigerators (cabinets with the refrigerating systems installed) manufactured, for the reason that certain manufacturers of refrigerating systems purchase their cabinets, or manufacture them in plants other than those in which the systems are made, and have them shipped to warehouses for assembly. In these cases both the manufacturers of the systems and the manufacturers of the cabinets report separately to the Bureau of the Census, but no reports are made for the assembling done in their warehouses. More

1 The term "system," as used here, refers to a complete assembly, consisting of "high side" and "low side," with motor control, and expansion valve or its equivaent. The cabinet is not a part of the system.

over, certain dealers purchase refrigerating mechanisms and cabinets from the manufacturers and have them shipped to warehouses for assembly. These dealers do not, of course, report to the Bureau of the Census as manufacturers. as manufacturers. Thus the census figures show the entire output of refrigerating systems for sale as such by manufacturers, of cabinets for sale as such by manufacturers, and of complete refrigerators for sale as such by manufacturers, but do not show the total number of complete refrigerators produced, including those assembled in warehouses.

Group 18.-AUTOMOBILES AND AUTOMOBILE EQUIPMENT

Description of the group of industries. This group includes two industries: "Motor vehicles, motor-vehicle bodies, parts and accessories" and "Automobile trailers (for attachment to passenger cars)." For a detailed explanation of the scope of each of these industries, see pages 524 and 530. Prior to the 1939 Census of Manufactures the manufacture or assembly of motor vehicles and the manufacture of bodies, parts, and accessories (including all motor-vehicle trailers) were treated as separate industries. To obtain figures comparable with those for 1939, the statistics for these industries for previous years have been combined.

Cost of materials and value of products.-The figures for cost of materials and the figures for value of products

for this group of industries include considerable duplication due to the fact that the products of establishments engaged in the manufacture of bodies, parts, and accessories are to a great extent consumed by other establishments in the manufacture of subassemblies and complete vehicles. To the extent that this condition exists, the published figures for cost of materials, etc., exceed the actual net cost of materials and the published figures for total value of products exceed the actual net value of products. The figures for "Value added by manufacture" contain no duplication and are therefore more significant and of greater statistical value, than the figures for "Cost of materials" and the figures for "Value of products."

1 See GENERAL EXPLANATIONS-Definition of establishment.
See GENERAL EXPLANATIONS-Wage earners and wages.
Cost of contract work is included in the figures for 1939, 1937, and 1935, but not for prior years.

Value of products less cost of materials, supplies, fuel, purchased electric energy, and contract work. See GENERAL EXPLANATIONS-Value added by manufacture. The 1937 figures shown in italics are comparable with the statistics for 1939 and include data for 3 establishments which were originally classified in another group for 1937 and previous years but which have now been reclassified in this group. The roman-type figures for 1937 do not include data for these 3 establishments and are comparable with the statistics for prior years. Not called for on schedule.

7 Data not available.

No comparable data are available for years prior to 1904.

The 1937 figures include data for 3 establishments which were originally classified in other industries for 1937 and previous years but which have now been transferred to this industry, effective with 1937. Data for the 85 establishments which in 1937 were primarily engaged in the manufacture of passenger-car trailers have been excluded.
