The establishments classified in this industry are engaged wholly or chiefly in the manufacture of machinery for use in the textile industries. The relatively large volume of "Extra parts, attachments, and accessories," more than twofifths of the total value of textile machinery and parts made in 1939, is accounted for by the fact that some manufacturers of textile machinery ship a considerable proportion of their output, especially that destined for export, in the form of "knocked-down" or partly assembled machines. The records of these manufac CENSUS YEAR turers do not in all cases show the numbers of complete machines represented by such shipments, and accordingly they are necessarily reported as parts. At previous censuses, establishments reporting roll covering or re-covering as their major activity were assigned to this classification but are assigned to the "Machine-shop products, not elsewhere classified" industry for 1939. These establishments numbered 44 in 1937 but since the total amount of receipts for the work done was only $1,148,668, no adjustments. have been made in the figures for 1937 and former years given in these tables.
