NONFERROUS-METAL PRODUCTS NOT ELSEWHERE CLASSIFIED [A preliminary report for this industry was issued October 31, 1940] Description of the industry.-The establishments classified in this industry are engaged primarily in the production, from nonferrous metals, other than aluminum, of bearings and bushings, die castings, forged and hot-pressed parts, spun ware, and other nonferrous products not elsewhere classified. Prior to 1939 the establishments of this industry formed a part of the "Nonferrous-metal alloys; nonferrous products, except aluminum, not elsewhere classified" industry. Figures comparable with those for 1939 have been prepared for 1937, but comparable figures for earlier census years are not available. This group of industries embraces establishments engaged primarily in the manufacture of machinery, apparatus, and supplies for employment directly in the generation, storage, transmission, or utilization of electric energy. The group includes the "Radios, radio tubes, and phonographs" industry, but it does not cover establishments whose principal products are electric-lighting fixtures, electric signs or motor-driven tools, mechanical refrigerators, washing machines, and other machines and appliances constructed with built-in motors or other electrical equipment (such machines and appliances being classified for census purposes in other industries), unless the electrical equipment is made in the same plants by the same manufacturers and contributes at least one-half of the total value of the machines or appliances. (See second table, page 402.) The number of establishments shown in this report is therefore considerably smaller than the total number of manufacturers commonly thought of as manufacturing electrical equipment. The following individual industries were combined to make up the electrical machinery group in the Census of Manufactures for 1939: 1. Wiring devices and supplies. 2. Carbon products for the electrical industry, and manufactures of carbon or artificial graphite. 3. Electrical measuring instruments. 4. Generating, distribution, and industrial apparatus, and apparatus for incorporation in manufactured products, not elsewhere classified. 5. Electrical appliances. 6. Insulated wire and cable. 7. Automotive electrical equipment. 8. Electric lamps. 9. Radios, radio tubes, and phonographs. 10. Communication equipment. 11. Batteries, storage and primary (dry and wet). 12. X-ray and therapeutic apparatus and electronic tubes. 13. Electrical products not elsewhere classified. With the exception of the "Radios, radio tubes, and phonographs" industry, which has been a separate industry beginning with the 1931 census, they were all combined in the single industry "Electrical machinery, apparatus, and supplies" at the censuses for 1931, 1933, 1935, and 1937. Prior to the 1931 Census for Manufactures, radios and radio tubes were included in the "Electrical machinery, apparatus, and supplies" industry, but "Phonographs" was a separate industry classification. 361 463396 42- -24 1 Cost of contract work is included in the figures for 1939, 1937, and 1935, but is not included in those for prior years. The figures for "Refrigerators, mechanical" for the years prior to 1927 are included in part in those for this group and in part in those for the former "Foundry and machine-shop products, not elsewhere classified" industry. |
