TABLE 3.-PRODUCTS, BY CLASS, KIND, QUANTITY, AND VALUE, FOR THE UNITED STATES: 1939, 1937, AND 1929—

[blocks in formation]

1 Includes the production of steel castings in the "Steel castings" industry and a small amount produced in other industries and for this reason exceeds the sum of the "Ingots" and "Direct steel castings" tonnage shown below.

? For the total production of steel castings see tables 7 and 8 and the report entitled "Iron and Steel Foundry Products."

The tonnage of finished hot-rolled products and forgings includes minor duplications for 1939 and 1937 because of the fact that some rounds or blanks for seamless pipes and tubes, which were transferred or sold to other plants within the industry, are again included under the item "Pierced billets," and also by the fact that some manufac turers reported the production of hot-rolled strip coils (which were transferred to other plants) under the item "Plain" sheets. This production was further processed and again reported under the same item or as "Black for tinning."

Data on the production of pierced billets, rounds, and blanks were not reported for 1929. For further details on comparability see explanation in 1935 report. The production of rerolled or renewed rails is combined with rails for 1939 to avoid disclosing, exactly or approximately, the data of a company or corporation. Made for sale and for interplant transfer.

Produced and consumed in the same works.

Includes a small tonnage and value of stainless steel rods.

Not called for separately on schedule.

10 "Made for sale and for interplant transfer" combined with "Steel bars" of "Carbon steel" to avoid disclosing, exactly or approximately, the data for a company or corporation. "Treaded floor plates made for sale and for interplant transfer" are included with "Sheared plates."

12 No data available.

13 The total tonnage of "Plain" sheets shown for 1929 is comparable with subsequent years, but the break-down of this tonnage into "Made for sale," "Interplant transfers," and "Produced and consumed in same works" for 1929 is not comparable with 1937 and 1939 because of the reporting of cold-rolled sheets separately for the first time in 1935. For further explanation see 1935 Biennial Census of Manufactures report. 14 Not reported separately. Included in figures for other types of plates and sheets.

15 Not reported separately. Included in figures for other classifications under "Strip, bands, flats, scroll and hoops, narrower than 24 inches."

16 In addition to rolled and forged iron and steel products not elsewhere specified, the figures include the tonnage (produced and consumed in the same works) of armor plate, axles, car and locomotive wheels, concrete reinforcing bars, rails, rerolled rails, rail joints, sheet piling and stainless steel plates, sheets, strips, bars and rods for which separate figures cannot be given without disclosing, exactly or approximately, the production reported by a company or corporation. The quantity of stainless steel (produced and consumed in same works) included in this figure for 1939 is 20,122 tons.

17 For total production of wire and wire products made in departments of rolling mills and in establishments classified in other industries, see separate report covering Wire Products subgroup; Tin Plate and Terneplate (see page 195); wrought pipes and tubes; bolts, nuts, washers, and rivets; cut nails, spikes, and tacks; galvanized plates and sheets; corrugated sheets; cold-rolled sheets and strips; cold-finished steel bars; horseshoes; railroad spikes; and iron and steel rolls for rolling mills (see table 4).

1 In addition to the products covered by this table, steel works and rolling mills reported for 1939 the manufacture for sale of the following commodities: Switches, frogs, and crossings, 34, 132 tons (2,240 pounds), valued at $5,231,775; gray-iron castings (made for sale and interplant transfer), 378,152 tons, valued at $11,467,693; heat corrosion-resistant alloy castings and nonferrous-metal castings, $1,608,736; polished, planished, or glanced sheets, and pressed, stamped and other shapes, not advanced beyond pressing, 185.867 tons, valued at $18,549, 104; miscellaneous iron and steel prod ucts including fabricated structural steel, machinery, and steel springs, $51,865,515. Figures showing the total output of these products in all industries in which they are manufactured are given, so far as available, in the reports for the industries in which they are normally classified.

Made wholly or almost wholly in the "Steel works and rolling mills" industry. Not including machine screws. For statistics on production of machine screws, cap and set screws, and other screw-machine products and wood screws, see report entitled "Screw-machine products and wood screws."

4 Revised.

No comparable data.

For production of wire nails, brads, spikes, and tacks, see report entitled "Wire and wire products."

7 Production of horseshoe nails included in "Cut nails and spikes" to avoid disclosing, exactly or approximately, the figures for individual establishments. 8 No data.

Conduit produced by establishments manufacturing pipe is included under the respective items of black and galvanized pipe. The data on total production of conduit (produced by manufacturers of pipe and that produced by manufacturers who purchase pipe) are shown in the report for "Electrical Machinery" group.

19 Not called for separately prior to 1939. Included in other classifications of pipe and tubes. Includes a small tonnage and value of sheets slit to widths under 24 inches. 12 For production of cold-rolled from drawn wire, see report entitled "Wire Products."

1 The following definitions relating to alloy steel were carried on the schedule used for the year 1939:

Alloy steel, other than stainless: Includes steel only where the minimum of the range specified in any of the elements named exceeds the following percentages: Nickel, 0.40 percent; chromium, 0.30 percent; copper, 0.50 percent; manganese, 1.65 percent; silicon, 0.50 percent; molybdenum, 0.10 percent; vanadium, tungsten, cobalt, titanium, and zirconium, any percent.

Stainless steel includes all steels (other than tool steels) containing 9 percent or more of chromium, with or without other alloys, or a combined content of 18 percent or more of chromium and other alloys.

Includes data for 142,093 tons of stainless steel for 1939 of which 140,005 tons were ingots and 2,088 tons were castings; and 125,070 tons of stainless steel for 1937.

Includes a very small production of Bessemer alloy steel, figures for which are withheld to avoid disclosing approximations of production reported by individual companies.

Includes data on production for "Steel works and rolling mills" and "Steel castings" industries.
