In order that the tabulation may be more clearly understood the following analysis is given and the groups so arranged as to show as far as possible the condition of the various classes or grades of workingmen from whom information has been secured.

Returns have been received from 200 individuals, and have been divided into 7 groups of as nearly the same degree of efficiency and capacity for earnings as was considered to be the average existing throughout the State. This, while being largely the result of comparisons made of information gained from workingmen other than those making returns, with the data found in the completed schedules, the latter only being made use of in the tables, it is thought that the classification made will be found to be approximately correct.

GROUP 1.-IS composed of 25 individuals, and is made up of 9 foremen, 3 accountants, 2 engineers, 4 machinists, 1 diemaker and 6 skilled mechanics, the average age being 43.7 years, 21 being native and 4 foreign born; average number in family, 3.6; average weekly hours of labor, 56.7; average weeks employed at regular occupation during the year, 49.2; and the average weekly wages, $18.88; 12 owned their homes, 7 of which were incumbered; 10 were rent-payers, paying an average monthly rental of $15.05; and 3 unmarried and paying nothing for rent, taxes, interest or repairs.

The 12 houseowners report the total annual cost of living as being $782.79 per family, while the total annual earnings per family was $1,038.06; the per cent. cost of living of earnings (exclusive of interest, taxes, &c.) was 64.9, and the expense for interest, taxes, water rents and repairs was 10.5 per cent, of total earnings; the possible savings being 24.6 per cent, of earnings.

The 10 individuals tabulated in this group as rent-payers report total annual cost of living as being $785.40 per family; the total amount of earnings per family being $976.01, thus making the cost of living 62 per cent., rent 18.5 per cent., and the possible savings 19.5 per cent, of earnings.

The 3 individuals reported as paying no rent, interest or taxes show annual cost of living to be $506.00 per person, the

annual earnings being $844.20; hence the cost of living was 59.9 per cent, of earnings, and the possible savings of earnings 40.1 per cent.

GROUP 2.-IS composed of 6 iron and brass molders, 6 buffers, 6 polishers and 7 press and drop hands, of the average age of 34 years, 14 being native and 11 foreign born; average number in family, 2.6; average weekly hours of labor, 57.04; average weeks employed at regular occupation, 47.04; and the average weekly earnings, $11.98; 2 owned their homes, both being incumbered; 12 12 were rent-payers, paying an average monthly rental of $10.67; and 11 unmarried, paying nothing for rent, taxes, interest or repairs.

The 2 houseowners report the total cost of living as being $455.00 per family, and the total annual earnings $588.00 per family; the per cent, cost of living of earnings (exclusive of interest, taxes, &c.) was 72.3 per cent., and the expense for interest, taxes, water rents and repairs was 5.1 per cent. of total earnings; the possible per cent. savings of earnings being 22.6.

The 12 employés tabulated as rent-payers earned $678.68 per family; the total cost of living per family being $562.62; the per cent, cost of living of earnings (exclusive of rent) was 64 per cent., the rent 18.9 per cent., and the possible savings 17.1 per cent. of earnings.

The 11 individuals paying no rent, interest or taxes made annual earnings of $537.03 per person; the cost of living being $411.36 per individual, or 76.6 per cent., and the possible savings 23.4 per cent, of earnings.

GROUP 3.-Consists of 1 carriage-maker, I sawyer, 2 painters, 3 carpenters, 10 bench and 8 machine hands, of the average age of 44.3 years, 19 being native and 6 foreign born; average number in family, 4.3; average weekly hours of labor, 58.8; average weeks employed at regular occupation during the year, 48.4; and the average weekly earnings, $13.56; 10 own homes, 5 of which were free of incumbrance and 5 incumbered; 15 were rent-payers, the average monthly rental being $11.30.

The 10 houseowners report the total annual cost of living as being $543.40, and the total annual earnings $789.08 per family; the per cent. cost of living of earnings (exclusive of interest, taxes, &c.) was 60.1 per cent., and the expense for interest, taxes,

water rents and repairs 8.7 per cent. of total earnings; 31.2 being the possible per cent, savings of earnings.

The 15 employés reported as paying rent made annual earnings of $698.53 per family; the total annual cost of living was $649.59 per family; the cost of living (exclusive of amount paid for rent) was 73.6 per cent., the rent 19.4 per cent.; and the possible savings 7 per cent, of earnings.

GROUP 4.-Is made up of 3 stone masons, I annealer, 1 japanner, 4 dippers, 3 weavers, 2 firemen, 2 teamsters, I watchman, 2 motormen, and 6 metal-workers, of the average age of 39.7 years; 11 were native and 14 foreign born; average number in family, 3.4; average weekly hours of labor, 56.68; average weeks employed at regular occupation during the year, 43.76; and the average weekly earnings, $12.13; 8 own their own homes, being free of incumbrance and 7 mortgaged; 13 reported as being rent-payers, the average monthly rental being $8.12, and 4 paying no interest, taxes or rent.

The 8 houseowners report the total annual cost of living as being $576.75, and the total annual earnings $762.90 per family; the per cent. cost of living of earnings (exclusive of interest, taxes, &c.) was 63.3, and the expense for interest, taxes, water rents and repairs 12.3 per cent. of the total earnings; and the possible savings of earnings 24.4 per cent.

The 13 individuals reported as paying rent show total annual earnings of $525.28 per family, the total cost of living being $460.00 per family; the cost of living (exclusive of amount paid for rent) was 69 per cent., the rent 18.6 per cent., and the possible savings 12.4 per cent, of earnings.

Four employés, paying no rent, interest or taxes show annual cost of living to have been $453.50, and the annual earnings $572.77 per person; the per cent, cost of living of earnings was 79.2, and the possible savings 20.8 per cent. of earnings.

GROUP 5.-Consists of 50 workingmen employed as shop, quarry and street laborers, of the average age of 37.1 years, 9 being native and 41 foreign born; average number in family, 3.5; average weekly hours of labor, 57.16; average weeks em. ployed at regular occupation during the year, 38.34; and the average weekly earnings, $8.57; 5 own their own homes, all

being incumbered; 42 were rent-payers, the average monthly rental being $5.48, and 3 paying no interest, taxes or rent.

The 5 houseowners report the total annual earnings as being $475.12, and the total cost of living $395.88 per family; the per cent. cost of living of earnings (exclusive of interest, taxes, &c.) was 67.1, and the expense for interest, taxes, water rents and repairs 16.2 per cent. of total earnings, and the possible savings of earnings 16.7 per cent.

The 42 employés reported as rent-payers show total annual earnings of $387.68 per family, the total annual living expenses being $387.56 per family; the cost of living (exclusive of amount paid for rent) was 79.78 per cent., the rent 20.19 per cent., and the possible savings .03 per cent. of earnings.

Three employés, paying no rent, interest or taxes show annual cost of living to have been $341.67, and the annual earnings $417.50 per person; the per cent, cost of living of earnings being 81.8, and the possible savings 18.2 per cent. of earnings.

GROUP 6.-Consists of 25 individuals engaged in miscellaneous occupations, of the average age of 40.7 years, 19 being native and 6 foreign born; average number in family, 3.8; average weekly hours of labor, 57.6; average weeks employed at regular occupation during the year, 47.32; and the average weekly earnings, $16.86; 8 own their own homes, 5 being incumbered and 3 free of debt; 2 houseowners, however, being also rentpayers by reason of the fact that the houses are located elsewhere than place of residence, will be classified as rent-payers in this analysis; 17 reported as rent-payers (including the two houseowners mentioned above), the average monthly rental being $11.08; 2 paying no interest, taxes or rent.

The 6 houseowners report the total annual earnings as being $961.67, and the total cost of living of earnings (exclusive of interest, taxes, &c.) was 50 per cent.; and the expense for interest, taxes, water rents and repairs 14.6 per cent, of total earnings, and the possible savings of earnings 35.4 per cent.

The 17 employés reported as rent-payers show total annual earnings of $819.66 per family, the total annual living expenses being $698.48 per family; the cost of living (exclusive of amount paid for rent) was 66.3 per cent., the rent 18.9 per cent., and the possible savings 14.8 per cent. of earnings.

Two individuals, paying no rent, interest or taxes show

annual cost of living to have been $615.00, and the annual earnings $840.00 per person; the per cent. cost of living of earnings being 73.2, and the possible savings 26.8 per cent, of earnings.

GROUP 7.-Consists of 25 individuals employed in the hatting industry, of the average age of 39.2 years, 14 being of native and II of foreign birth; average number in family, 3.2; average weekly hours of labor, 42.48; average weeks employed at regular occupation during the year, 42.92; and the average weekly earnings, $10.72; 4 own their own homes, 3 of which were incumbered; 16 reported as being rent-payers, the average monthly rental being $9.50; 5 paying no interest, taxes or rent.

The 4 houseowners report the total annual living expenses to have been $632.25, and the total annual earnings $766.12 per family; the per cent. cost of living of earnings (exclusive of interest, taxes, &c.) was 71 per cent.; and the expense for interest, taxes, water rents and repairs 11.5 per cent. of earnings, the possible savings of earnings being 17.5 per cent.

The 16 employés reported as rent-payers show total annual earnings of $536.94 per family, the total annual living expenses being $498.37 per family; the cost of living (exclusive of amount paid for rent) was 71.6 per cent., the rent 21.2 per cent., and the possible savings 7.2 per cent. of earnings.

Five individuals, paying no rent, interest or taxes show annual cost of living to have been $345.00, and the annual earnings $433.30 per person; the per cent, cost of living of earnings being 79.6, and the possible savings 20.4 per cent. of earnings.
